• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1) Decongestants. Many times short term ringing is due to blocked sinus/ear passages.

2) Make sure the ear is clear of all wax, etc.

3) Play music or other sound pretty continuously. Some folks even sleep with white noise boxes to help reduce the perceived volume of the ringing.

4) No caffeine - sometimes this contributes to ringing.

I've got high pitched ringing in my right ear as well. Doctors say there's nothing they can do. In most cases, it will go away.

What laptoppop said is right-on. I have tinnitus that comes and goes, and it's worst at night when there is no other sound. I find the white noise recomendation to be very helpful, at night I turn my radio to a spot on the AM dial where nothing comes in but static, this helps me sleep. Good luck!

I've been having this constant high pitch ringing in my right ear now for the past two days, it's really starting to get me down, anyone have any advice on how to deal with it until I can get to the Doctors? It's driving me mad!
I have tinnitus too.

Things you can do to help your ability to hear:
  1. Try to expose yourself to pure silence whenever possible, then LISTEN for everything while you go about your day. Try and tune your heating to ignore the rinning and pick up the quietest of sounds.
  2. Don't turn your stereo up all the way. Your eats don't need to bleed to indicate you are having fun. If you can hear the music, it's loud enough. Also try and reserve music for "music time." For example, listen to music when you are at the computer, driving (don't adjust the radio / CD player when driving, please), riding in a car with a friend, reading, getting ready for bed, and similar situations where you're standing or sitting still. This makes music time "special" and not run-of-the-mill, so when you do listen, it is a special experience. This will also discourage music that is too loud. A big tip is pain. If you are listening to music, and your ears hurt at all, the music is too loud.
  3. Avoid concerts unless you really want to go. If you must go, use ear plugs.
  4. Go to the phramacy and buy an ear wax cleaning kit. Use this kit weekly unless directed to do otherwise.
  5. If someone is yelling, playing loud music, or doing something that causes your ears to hurt or the ringing to increase, inform them you have tinnintus and that the person is potentially making the situation worse. It doesn't have to be any more confrontational than if a buddy accidentally shines a flashlight in your face.
  6. Wear ear protection AT ALL TIMES when opperating yard tools like a weedwacker or engaging in activities like home repair where hammers, saws, and other loud tools are being used.
That's all I can think of for now. The most important thing is to pray whenever tinnitus becomes noticable. Don't simply pray for God to make the ringing go away. The ringing is your brain's way of telling you that damage has occured to your hearing ability. You want to pray that God heal your hearing. If and when this occurs, the ringing will obviously go away.

Thank you all for your much appreciated advice.

I went to the Doctors and he had a look at my ears and said my ears look clean so he doesn't think it's an infection or a build up of wax, he suggests it's tinnitus and his advice was to 'ignore it' (easy for him to say, I wonder if he's ever experienced it and tried to 'ignore it').

I will follow advice given here in this thread and see what works for me. The biggest help so far has been prayer. So I will press on and keep others also experiencing tinnitus in my prayers too.

Thanks again.

welll as permement suffer of Tinnitus (yes young people can get it permement) i would say ignore it. I dont think there is much you can do about it, but it can be a sign or an ear infection or some sort of nerve damage, or even something else. I hope it all gets sorted!

Myabe thats hard i dont know. I understand how it feels to hear that all the time

Thanks for your advice jellybean, I thought I was young having tinnitus at 30 lol, it's horrible isn't it, very frustrating, :sigh: it's been constant for 5 days now. Do you ever get a break from it?

Well ive had it as long as i can remember! so.. not very annoying :)

a break... yeah other noises drown it out normally its at a very low level or ive learnt to ignore it so much that i drowned it out. But when there is "silence" there is tinnitus.

I hope one day there is a cure though ^_^

Ok, well i have 2 technique's , they sound crazy but they work.

1. put your little finger in your ear then push till all the air is out, and you feel vacuum suction on your finger. Now pull your finger towards the side, so you feel the air sucing on your ear, draggin and vacuum air pulling like your plumbing a toilet. After you've pulled the tingeling should go away.

However if its really really severe.

Put a finger behind your ear flap(lowest point) then keep on pressing up and down up and down for (1 hour long) an elder thought me this technique and i absolutely did NOT believe it would work, but one time when i got a very persistant tinnitus in my ear, i tried it and it actually went and gone away.

So many people with it!!
I so used to it (for years i thought that's normal, that ther is "sound of silence" ;) ) that i can't come with any help. i hear it only if i remind myself of it...So try not to think :D. Probably listening to quite music maight be help..

In my case it was sympton of tumor.
Is it one side or both? If it want go for some time maybe you should have your hearing tested (audiogram)???

n.

I just reminded myself sth: I was told that there are special classes to learn people to deal with it. If we have them in Poland, then for sure you have to have themm too!

Thanks for all the advice.

I just have it in my right ear, I still have it, it's yet to stop, but every now and then I think it has stopped only to listen hard enough to realise it's still there, this persistant annoying ringing! But I guess if I'm finding myself thinking that its stopped then it means I'm getting used to it and therefore am starting to cope with it and not let it bother me so much. I hope it does eventually stop but it may never I suppose?.

I'll continue to pray and keep all of you and others who expereince tiniitus in my prayers.
