• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

God is supposed to be the perfect judge for all of creation. Do you really consider this true? Here are a few examples of what God would call justice.
 • If a woman tries to defend her husband and accidentally touches the genitals of another man while fighting she is to have her hand cut off. - Deuteronomy 25:11
 • If a son is stubborn or rebellious, he is to be stoned to death. - Deuteronomy 21:18-2
 • If a man hates his wife all he has to do is accuse her of not being a virgin when he married her. If her parents can't provide a bloody sheet to prove that she was a virgin on her wedding night, she is to be stoned to death. - Deuteronomy 22:13-21
 • If a woman is raped and doesn't cry out she is to be stoned to death. - Deuteronomy 22:23-24
 • If the daughter of a priest is promiscuous she is to be burnt to death. - Leviticus 21:9
 • If a man has intercourse with a woman while she is on her menstrual cycle they are both to be put to death. - Leviticus 20:18
 • Homosexuals are to be put to death. - Leviticus 20:13
 • Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death. - Exodus 22:19, Leviticus 20:15-16
 • Those who don't get circumcised are to be put to death. - Genesis 17:14
 • Anyone who works on the sabbath is to be put to death. - Exodus 31:14-17
 • Offering sacrifices that aren't in keeping with God's strict orders will get you killed. - Leviticus 10:1-2
 • Butchering an animal without letting God get a taste of the blood is a crime punishable by death. - Leviticus 17:3-4
 • If someone commits blasphemy against God they are to be put to death. - Leviticus 24:16
 • Anyone who studies astrology is to be stoned to death. - Deuteronomy 17:2-5
 • If someone tries to get you to go to a different church, they are to be stoned to death without pity or mercy. - Deuteronomy 13:6-11
 • If the inhabitants of a city begin to worship other gods they are to be slaughtered and their city burned to the ground. - Deuteronomy 13:12-17
 • Witches are to be killed. - Exodus 22:18
 • Cursing your parents will get you put to death. - Exodus 21:17, Leviticus 20:9
 • If an animal or human even touches Mount Sinai while God is on it, they are to be shot with arrows or stoned to death. - Exodus 19:12-14
 • God makes a comprehensive list of all the horrible things that will happen if his chosen people don't follow the laws and commandments that are in the Bible. Included are such things as hemorrhoids, scabs, itching which doesn't heal, blindness, insanity, sores from head to foot, famine, cannibalism and pestilence from all sides. - Deuteronomy 28:15-68
Is this what Christians believe should be law? Afterall it's in the Bible! So it must be true!

More copy and paste from the atheist sites, hmmmm.
First, the translation is off for your first accusation, as it is no "accident" when some one comes after you in a fight..., and before the time of grace came with Jesus, it was "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth". The whole idea of the law was to show that man could not follow it and that the consequences were terrible for those who could not live by it. Jesus came to show that God was willing to pay for all that with His own life in the flesh and cancel the terrible effects of the law following man's fall into sin and death. Because of mankind letting sin and death enter into the dimension God created for them to grow and learn in, the consequences were severe, and they are shown in the Old Covenant where God taught man of a better thing to come. Nothing was ever lost to Him that He could not raise it up to new life, and Jesus brought with Him a new nature for mankind through His Holy Spirit - a gift, where we can fight the old nature of sin and death and overcome it. Those who refuse this gift of the Holy Spirit remain under the law and its terrible consequences of death.
Being shut out by the second death is even more severe, and anything that would prevent a soul from entering the second death is a favor from God IMO.

Re 2:11 "Anyone who is willing to hear should listen to the Spirit and understand what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be hurt by the second death.

Re 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.

Re 20:14 And death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire.

Re 21:8 But cowards who turn away from me, and unbelievers, and the corrupt, and murderers, and the immoral, and those who practice witchcraft, and idol worshipers, and all liars—their doom is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death."

Are we talking about law, or about justice? The two aren't the same - much of the time they aren't even remotely connected.

Afterall it's in the Bible!
Well, some of your examples are. Some are the result of dodgy translation etc.

So it must be true!
What do you mean true? For the most part they are instructions, not statements. How can an instruction be true or false?

They are part of a codiefied law constructed by Israel as it responded to it's encounters with and slowly growing understanding of God.

God's justice is mercy and self-sacrifice, not punishment.

You miss the big picture when you critisize God for being faithful and true in showing man the terrible consequences of falling into sin and death. Not one of those people who died in the Old Testament where lost to the Creator's perfect justice, and all that seems extreme from God is only a response to the extremity of sin and death. This life and the life they entered into is a life incomplete and temporary, ending in the body of corruption. The "eye for and eye and tooth for a tooth" of the Old Testament makes a valid statement about life after death entered the world and what a great fall mankind experienced when it fell into sin and death. All the severity states what the consequences of that fall bring when men do not have the nature to obey God's law. So what is the penalty of sin that God teaches us even today? All men still die, and they need to realize it as a horrible thing, not to be accepted as normal. It was not God's intention that man die when He first created man and gave the ability to choose, but to live, and He states His love for man not only with word, but with His actions of sacrificing His own life in the dimension of flesh for mankind's sin and death - to redeem all who accept His gift back to eternal life.
So the Old Testaments severity only speaks of God's faithfulness to not candy-coat what is something all men should fear - the second death which is the final one. He is faithful to show the truth of what happens to those who live in rebellion to His provision, leadership, and law, so whether one dies breaking the law or quietly in their beds of old age it is only a blink of the eye to eternity's dimension.
What beauty and awesome power created the universe and gave us this gift of life. If we had no examples of the horribleness of what death is we would all pass into it without any warning, like refuse, but God put great worth on man and made great efforts to deal with mankinds fall - even loving man enough to become a man and suffer punishment of death for all men who would accept His sacrifice for sin and His Holy Spirit that regenerates spiritual life in man..
God does not just give us the pretty axioms of wisdom, but paints the true picture of mankind's condition - caught in a curse of sin and death with all the severity extremity that goes along with it, yet providing new life and a way back to eternal life through His grace - unmerited favor on man's part.

Way to go. Most people only manage to take one or two verses out of context. You managed to get all of them wrong.

Why would Christians believe that these things should be law, when Christianity teaches that these things (as far as they're placed in the Biblical context, not the way you've presented them) are a part of the Jewish ceremonial law that Jesus has fulfilled?

Exactly the point I was making in my post above.

You can't use those verses against God when they synch up perfectly to what Jesus fulfilled in the New Testament, Teen. But if you've never read the Bible for yourself and you use sites like that one as your source for information, what do you expect to learn?

I'll say it again, and add a little bulk.

First thing, ancient Jewish customs were very, very stern. Times have changed. Secondly, the Mosaic Law was done away with when Christ died on Calvary. These customs, the 'law', were made to show something -- one, that the grace of Christ is more powerful than it, yet simple enough for a child to understand. Two, that according to the law, we are all sinners, but through Christ the law has been done away with and we have forgiveness. Also, Leviticus is speaking to the Levi Tribe, not to anyone else. Those laws never belonged to us in the first place.

In short, none of the verses above apply to any of us.

You see, the Bible is much deeper than it appears at first glance. Like the story of Noah's Ark, it's allegorical for Christianity today. Whoever isn't inside the boat is subject to the coming judgment. It also shows that the path of righteousness is truly straight and narrow, and the path of judgment is wide.

To answer your final question, yes, that's exactly what I believe to be 'law'. I also know that the law has been abolished, and has been replaced with grace with the New Testament. True, it's in the Bible -- so is Judas' betrayal, does that make it right?

At least seek the answers for yourself, and don't use sites which sole purpose is to disarm you and rattle your faith.

First, your quoting scriptures from the Old Testament. The Old Testament was written for the Jewish and they were under the law. They sacrificed animals for their sins - and it covered their sins not take them away.

Today, we are under the New Testament in which are sins are taken away because Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Yes, this is in the Old Testament because it makes one aware just how serious sin really is. Yes, I really do believe the Bible. Why? First, its a spiritual and moral decision. Second, there are more evidence and facts about the Bible than any book in the world - its an intellectual decision secondly.

Its the only book at all that has hundreds of prophesies in that has come true and more to come in detail. It has history, science, archeological, wisdom, legal, songs, poems all rolled into one book. Read Examine the Evidence by Muncaster and/or Examine the Evidence Vol. I and II. These authors have done the research for us.

When God created everything, He gave man one rule by which to live. It was a test. Man failed it.

God later gave some 613 rules by which Israel was to live.

If Mankind couldn't keep one law, what chance has he to keep 613?

The old law was essentially taken away when Christ died for our sins. That was God's answer to man's inability to keep the law.

In God's economy there are two kinds of people. Those who believe and those who do not. There is good and evil, with no in-between.

Things in God's economy are right, or wrong. No other choice. Righteous or unrighteous.

God gave us the chance to be made righteous for all eternity, and it costs us nothing but our belief and our best efforts at doing what He wants us to do.

When we fail, we are forgiven.

Do you believe there is or can be perfect justice? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don't think most people (Christian or otherwise) understand what justice is, let alone perfect justice.

first of all, try reading the ENTIRE bible before you make rash statements. anything can be taken out of context to prove anybodys particular point. If you don't want to read the entire bible, try the gospel of John first, in order to help you realize what the Lord did for the ungodly.......for all of us, ......there is no greater love than the love someone has, that lays down their life for a friend.....that's what Jesus did for all of us so that we may have eternal life.

The problem is that the positions of all creatures and creators have been misplaced in the argument that the original poster put forward. Since we see things one way, while god may see them another, then God is automatically at fault because he does not agree with the way that we perceive reality and what it should be...

The Creator is far more a position to judge then the creation, just as a judge is in better position to judge then a convicted person is. The Old testament laws seem to harsh in our modern society, but that is only because we have forgotten who God is. If we are going to argue about God's justice then we have to allow god to be who the Bible shows Him to be, perfect, almighty, and eternal. We cannot bind Him, because then we are debating the facts of a different God.

Are scale of justice is a little bit out of line here. Let's bring it into terms, Teenatheist, shall we? Good. Ok, you and i are playing rugby and I make a move that is strictly outside of the guidelines of the rule book. You call me out on that, but I say that I am right? Who is right in this example? In order for their to be rules then rules had to have been established. There is a way to play rugby that is the way the offical rule book says it. if i break those rules, no matter how good i am or reason I have, I am still playing outside those rules. Going out of bounds or whatever.

The truth is obviously not subjective, or can be bent. It's not like food in that we get to choose what we like. i tell you I have a pen on my desk. The statement is true if it agrees with reality. it can either be right or worng, but it cannot both be right and wrong. Different religions teach that after we die we will not exist, or go to heaven, or go to hell, or go into an afterlife, or be brought back to earth. Yes, any of these could be true, but they can't all be true. We can't go to heaven and not exist at the same time. truth is absolute in nature... Want a better example? Try this on...

someone claims that it is perfectly justifiable and ok to capture and torture babies just for fun. Do you think that is would be alright to do this? Well, general answer would be no. There is a inner sense of truth and justice that says it is not alright for a person to torture babies just for fun. In fact, most men and women in the world would react very negatively to that. Even though the person believes it is alright the general population will say no. Who is right in this?

Now let us bring this to erms of God. God is perfect, all powerful and al mighty. He is pure and holy. He set down the rules and has every right to enforce them as He has laid them down. What s wrong is me not accepting the fact that I got a citation for jaywalking because I htink the law is stupid and meaningless. Do you see what I'm saying? Also, buddy, look at the continuation and fulfillment of the laws first and why they are established... If you have questions, PM me...

So it must be true!
the old laws although some still apply were for the Jews right? so they could be Pure, well, Jesus is the way we are forgivin NOW because he died for us, we can accept that and ask for forgiveness reather then cut off our hands or stone each other.

There are very Good answers to all these questions, have you looked at Carm.org?

As much as I enjoy a light and insightful banter about God, this is not that, this is little more then "How many objections can I find that will finally stump the defenders of the faith"

My only advice to you really, is not let others do your thinknig for you, you might finally ask a question we have not all hear a thousand times before.

God Bless
