Jesus was concerned about our overcoming self in this world in order to better understand the ways of the Kingdom. In following His commandments, we are unable to misuse the knowledge of good and evil, for in servitude there is no gain. That is the way of the Kingdom.
This is then why few follow the Gospel of the Kingdom, preferring another. Seriously! What of the things most people hold dear of this world/nation or within personal lives, revolves around no gain for self at the expense of others? No recourse but to self justify their means (be they good or evil) to achieve an end.
