I'll tell you about the time I signed up as a cleaner to "spring Clean" a school in 40 degrees heat of summer vacation.
Our boss, assured us of the urgency and importance of our job. Actually he told us a lot of things, which often didn't hold substance, as discovered later. "Bring me all your documents by tomorrow." So we did. Then the next day, "oh just take a photo of them and email them to the office."
"we hope to finish in 3 weeks". We finished in 7 days. So there was only 7 days work. But I was glad because it was blazing hot. I was easily the most overweight and struggled to keep up with the rest. Really struggled. I was huffing and puffing and sweating and sweating, and huffing and panting, and stressing and worrying if I was good enough for the job. I didn't get fired and kept up, well Ok in the end.
This job gave me an insight into how desperados like myself get themselves into situations like this. Most of my colleagues' second language was English. They were grateful for any work. Tolerated mixed messages from con man boss man.
On the last day, I noticed that 80% of us felt dudded because our job would evolve into just 2 hours a day, once school started.
All the urgency and scamming" oh you are doing such an important job, we'll give you the hours you want, thanks for your support".
So who was the biggest loser? I lost a few kg and gained some fitness, earned a few bucks, but overall my cynicism about "the real world" was reinforced. Look after number one, because no one out there gives a ****.
