Consider what the Tempter did with Jesus in the desert. Need it do any more than that with us?
If man has not put God's will first (stones to bread), put God to the test (throw Himself down), desire what the world has to offer (thus worship the adversary), then they have already failed and may continue to do so, unless there is change/repentance.
What man has not put self ahead of another, tested God by bargaining with Him (promise change if God does something for us), or gotten involved in the ways of mankind (especially the governance of man)? We are too easily fooled into thinking this world comes first.
