for sure they would've been invited (just like apx 20ys. ago... wow I better stop because I dont want to relive that sadness again)

My official invite (which would've been sent to them, "if only"...) :
"We're inviting you to share in celebrating our son's 18th birthday! Since you have been a part of our lives (& his) at which ever point, your presence there has value.Thanks."
Even then "his" has meaning here, because if there wouldn't have been no me... or me in the form "they" had a part in shaping- there wouldna been no "him.
