A few years ago I worked in a Nursing Home for the severely disabled. I only lasted about 3 months.
My job with colleagues was to bathe, shower, feed, attend to toileting needs, clothe, wheel around, get in and out of bed, and so on. It was a job I was neither skilled at nor enjoyed, to be honest.
One problem was colleagues. Many were impatient with rookie support workers like myself. I was not naturally gifted and perhaps showed a lack of initiative which they expected.
Another problem was working with female clients. I felt it was a strong invasion of their privacy. I could never fully relax, especially with showering and undressing.
And another problem was the number of clients, about 15. Each had unique needs and unique ways of communicating their needs. It was a hug e learning curve, Too huge.
I think I am only suited to caring for one severely disabled person. As long as we get along, preferably male, and I am skilled in catering for their needs, I could do it.Even with just one, I have so much to learn.
A famous Catholic priest became a carer, Henri Nouwen. he said it changed his life as he described the client becoming like His spiritual guide. I never reached that level but if I ever have to look after someone close, I at least have some experience in the matter now.
