I Thirst (John 19:38)
Lord,
what is your thirst?
Yes for water, for sure,
hanging on the cross,
your body scourged,
pain from the thorns
embedded in your scalp,
loss of blood,
struggling for breath;
yes, you were thirsty.
Thirst is all encompassing,
the body screaming for moisture,
cracked lips, swollen tongue,
a terrible experience.
What is the thirst of your deepest humanity,
God become man.
Why?
Was it because of this cosmic thirst?
What is the water of the heart?
Do all human thirst from this deep level?
Suffering so deep and all-encompassing
that we seek to assuage it in so many different ways,
yet it is like digging for a well,
leading to frustration.
Driving us to madness seen as human nature
in its darkness aspect?—Br.MD
