Luke 19:41-44
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” (ESV)
The Reformation Study Bible notes:
"19:41, 42 Only Luke records Jesus’ lament as He drew near the city. Jesus knew that the excitement of the crowds did not correspond to genuine spiritual perception and that the actions being pursued would inevitably bring war, not peace."
Jesus predicts the siege and destruction of Jerusalem, because it will reject its Messiah. History has shown this to be true. Even to this day, war and unrest shadow the city of Jerusalem. The things that make for peace are even to this day hidden from their eyes.
Matthew 23:39 - "For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Psalm 118:26 - Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD.
With so much violence going on in our world, we have one eye on Jerusalem, which will continue to see uprisings and terror attacks until the Prince of Peace returns.
When the inhabitants of Jerusalem see their Messiah return, they will mourn:
Revelation 1:7 - Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
Then they will bless their Lord who has come to bring judgment and peace.
Indeed, every eye shall see Jesus when he returns. There will be no doubt about who has come. No false messiah will deceive people, then!
