Jesus, Delivered Over to Death

Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, who is also God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – left his throne in heaven, came to earth, was born as a human baby to a human mother, but was conceived of the Holy Spirit. So when he lived on this earth he was both fully human and fully God (God incarnate). Jesus came to give us his message of salvation and then to die on a cross to put our sins to death with him so that by faith in him we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

While he lived on the earth he healed the sick and afflicted, raised the dead, delivered people from demons, fed the hungry, comforted the sorrowful, and preached repentance, death to sin, and obedience to our Lord for salvation from sin and for eternal life with God by God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ. But the majority did not receive him. They did not welcome him and his messages. And many wanted him dead, and so they potted his death, and they carried out his death on a cross, which was in the will of God.

[Isaiah 53:1-12; Matt 7:21-23; Matt 26:26-29; Lu 9:23-26; Lu 17:25; Jn 1:1-36; Jn 6:35-58; Jn 8:24,58; Jn 10:27-33; Jn 20:28-29; Rom 5:8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14; Rom 9:5; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Co 11:23-32; 1 Co 15:1-8; 2 Co 5:15,21; Eph 4:17-24; Php 2:5-11; Col 2:9; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 1:8-9; Heb 2:14-15; Heb 4:15; 1 Pet 2:24; 2 Pet 1:1; 1 John 3:4-10]

So Pilate “delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, ‘Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.’ Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, ‘Do not write, “The King of the Jews,” but rather, “This man said, I am King of the Jews.”’ Pilate answered, ‘What I have written I have written.’
“When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, ‘Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.’ This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,
“’They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.’” (John 19:16-24 ESV)
“After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:28-30 ESV)

But Jesus did not remain dead. God the Father resurrected him from the dead on the third day, which Jesus had said would happen. And when he rose from the dead he conquered sin, Satan, hell, and death on our behalf so that, by God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in him we might die with him to sin (not just once, but daily), and now be raised with him to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness – in the power and strength of God.

Because He Lives

By Gloria Gaither / William J. Gaither

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus;
He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth a living just because He lives

And then one day, I'll cross that river
I'll fight life's final war with pain
And then as death gives way to victory
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He reigns
