Caffeine is one of the most addictive substances known to man alongside nicotine and alcohol and is largely unregulated in most countries although it was illegal to drink coffee in public, punishable by death in the city of Istanbul in 1633.

The affects of caffeine can be felt within a hour of consumption increasing mental alertness and physical stamina, however due to the body's difficulty in breaking it down, it can take between 4 and 12 hours to disappear from a persons system.

It is possible to die of a caffeine overdose but it would take between 30 and 50 cups to do so.

In the USA there is a psychological disorder called "caffeine withdrawal disorder" symptoms of which can include tiredness, anxiety and low mood and can last between 2 and 9 days.

Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive drug on the planet with the international coffee organisation estimating about 1.4 billion cups are consumed on earth each day. 45% of those are in the USA alone.
