John 19:
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.
21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, The King of the Jews'; but that He said, 'I am King of the Jews.'"
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."
John 18:
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly(my emphasis) that I am a king For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
38 Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?"
Pilate tried to make a statement, but trying to make it sound like a question and that he didn't have his own opinion, or in other words-tried to play dumb. Jesus knew exactly what was going on with Pilate and responded to him, but not according to how Pilate worded things...
I firmly believe that in verse 38 Pilate was just trying to continue to cover up & make an excuse (maybe even trying to convince himself).
In the other above verses I just posted, I think Pilate hung the sign over Jesus and refusing to take it down because he was making a statement. I think he was trying to say that he did believe that Jesus was a King. He was probably also doing it hoping in some way to absolve any guilt from himself- just like he did by washing his hands and declaring to the crowd the guilt wasn't on him, but them, that it wasn't his idea to crucify Jesus.
I believe he believed who Jesus was, and had good wishes toward him. However his value of his position, and his fear of losing it was greater.
Luke 12:
8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.
51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
