The Sabbath is more than one day in seven but a way of life. Jesus was a personification of the Sabbath.
"If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Isaiah 58:13"
According to Isaiah, the true Sabbath keeper who will find the Sabbath a delight will not seek their own pleasure, or follow their own ways and not even speak their own words.
When I saw this it made me think of what Jesus said, the words I speak are not my own and the things I do are given to me from the Father. "I always do those things that please my Father." Basically he had no life of his own. He was constantly dependent upon and under the control of the Father for every word and deed. His life was the personification of the Sabbath rest. He set aside and rested from any and all self determination which brought him delight. He had learned from his earliest years to quietly listen and follow the still small voice within.
I knew a godly mother who would at times say to her children, "Listen and obey". This seems to be the sum and substance of redemption and the example that Jesus set. Learning to listen and know the voice of the Lover of our soul is feeding at the Tree of Life and the pathway back to Eden.
Feeding at the other tree has been the mistake of humanity ever since the fall. It is in human nature to fly by the seat of its pants, following desires, fears, inclinations and understandings. Humanity is ever measuring and weighing what is right and wrong, good or bad, trying to know where to go and what to do. And the greater folly, trying to prove that they are right and the other guy is wrong. The fearful seeker who does not know how to listen will have their list of what is right and wrong, always following the rules to the best of their ability, yet they are still feeding at the wrong tree. We cannot lean to our own understanding and find true Sabbath rest from our self.
