Adoration is not a Waste of Time

Love me, then, and trust in My love for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to inflame you with the same fire of love that burns in My Sacred Heart
and in the hearts of all My saints. It is in the prayer of adoration that this love grows strong, becoming a fire that gives light and warmth to all who approach it, burning in the hearts of My loved ones.

--The Journal of a Priest at Prayer (p. 232). Angelico Press. Kindle Edition.

People will often balk at spending ‘too’ much time in adoration, as if it were a waste of time. Adoration is the using of our energy to reach out to God, or to reach inward; how one looks at it does not matter. What matters is the willingness to spend time with the Infinite. To open up one’s heart in worship before the eternal mystery we call God, is our responding to the actual grace/invitation of our Father. God’s heart is always open, even when we are closed off, fearful, angry, or whatever pulls us into dark isolation from God, others, and yes, even ourselves. Alienation from self is very real. So common that it can be overlooked.

The incarnation of Jesus Christ, which is the revelation of the Father's love, does not take away from the ‘otherness’ of God. Yet, it shows us that ‘otherness’ is not an obstacle to intimacy with God. In adoration, we over time, come to understand that. Even if we do not have the language to express it well.

The Sacred Heart points to the nature of God as revealed to us in Jesus Christ. The heart of Jesus was fleshy, open, not afraid of pain, and did not allow evil to win by becoming overwhelmed with the desire to strike back. The more we spend time with the Lord, allowing grace to do its work, the more we grow into Christ Jesus Himself.

Those who die in Christ put on the Mind-Of-Christ, which is a process of growth into a complete union of our wills with the will of God. So the Saints do not simply dwell apart from us. Having the Mind and Heart of Christ Jesus they play an active role in our lives. Just as we do in our prayer life. We draw all of mankind into our hearts when we seek to put on the Mind and Heart of Christ Jesus.

So adoration is not a waste of time, but a time to allow the Holy Spirt to inflame our hearts until we can honestly say with St. Paul: “It is not I who live, but Christ Jesus who lives in me”.-Br.MD
