I went and saw The Devil Wears Prada tonight and I found the underlying story very confrontational…what will we sacrifice to get ahead in rat race? I think we’ve all done it – we’ve all trodden on someone just to be able to take that extra step towards ‘success’. But is it worth it?
Tonight I watched your average youth compromise everything she stood for. She placed her career over her friends, boyfriend and family. She became one of ‘them’ when she realised the way to get ahead would be to fit in and stop being who she was.
What will we do to get ahead? Some people relinquish old ties and loyalties, taking that step even if it means treading on someone in the process. Some people tread on themselves instead like ‘Emily’, the main characters colleague. So focused on a goal that she will do anything and everything to get there, even if it means starving herself in the process to become that ‘perfect size’.
It scares me a little how quickly we can change. Over the period of a few months we can become a totally different person if put in the right situations. Not that I’m saying change is a bad thing, but we need to pick our influences and remember our morals.
Will we be the people who continue to take and take and take until there is no one left to take from, or will we be the people who make the right choices, even when the alternative is easier?
