Paul goes on in chapter two to remind the Corinthians that he came to them in weakness and trembling relying on the message of the cross of Christ alone.
I thought it was interesting that the word trembling (tromos) is one who distrusts his ability to complete the requirements. In other words, he was not relying on his self. He did not wish for the faith of the Corinthians to rest on how clever with words or charismatic his personality was, but rather than on Christ. In fact, in 2 Cor 10:10 it says that Paul's critics said his physical appearance was unimpressive and his speech "contemptible".
His speech and testimony was filled with the demonstration (apodeixis- showing forth, proof) of the Spirit. Paul says there is a wisdom however that is for those who are spiritually mature. In John 14:17 the Spirit is called the Spirit of truth and the world Jesus said cannot receive him or does not know him. The Spirit in John 16:13 is to guide the believer in truth. The world cannot ever understand this truth because of the absence of the Spirit. To the flesh, the cross is foolishness.
Proof that they did not understand the mystery of the cross is that they crucified the Lord.
The Spirit is the Spirit of God who searches even the depths of God and is given that the believer might know the things of God.
natural vs.14- psychikos is an adjective which means of or belonging to breath.
mind vs.16- nous- the mind, understanding, perceiving, feeling, judging, determining.
The Spirit is given that they might know what is freely given by God. Freely given is charizomai- to do something pleasant or agreeable, to do a favour to.
The believer should pray as he studies the word and reads it that the Spirit, who reveals truth would help him or her understand the Scripture. We should understand that the foundation of the message is the cross of Christ and nothing else should be added 3:11.
If a person is going to understand spiritual truth it will not be because of clever tactics or slogans or man made ideas. The Spirit is the one who reveals and teaches the truth.
