I am posting my study notes of 1 Corinthians on this blog and welcome your comments. I am looking at first 1 Corinthians 1:1-17
Paul first stresses his apostleship is an apostle by calling which stresses God's initiative and it is also by the will of God. This is written in defense of those who would question Paul's apostleship as in 2 Corinthians 10.
He has a lot of positive things to say here about the Corinthians though they have their problems. They are sanctified "to set apart" for God's possession and use. They are saints, who call upon the Lord's name. They were enriched in speech and knowledge and had received grace.
v.7 they were gifted in many areas and not lacking, even though at the present time they were immature in their walk with Christ.
v.8 confirm- this was a technical legal term used to say their salvation was a guarantee security. Blameless means they were chargeless. These are so because of the faithfulness of god v.9
Paul had been informed by Chloe's people (servants) that there was divisions. Division is the word schisma- dissension, a division. Paul was calling for them to be of the same mind (nous) seat of perceiving, understanding, judging, determining and also judgment (gnome) the faculty of knowledge, mind. There were quarrels and this is a sign of spiritual immaturity.
They were called to have fellowship with Jesus. The word fellowship vs.9 is koinonia which means association, community, communion, intimacy. 1 John 1:3- John says that our fellowship is with Jesus. God just doesn't want us to avoid hell, but to have fellowship with Jesus that is free from condemnation Romans 8:1. There is no need for something to be between us and we can enjoy fellowship with God without fear. Romans 5:1 says that we are now justified by faith and have peace with God.
complete vs.10- katartizo verb- to fit, to mend, to repair, to complete
Paul did not want them to be divided and was grateful that he did not baptize many, so that some would brag that their baptism was better than others. Paul had only baptized a few int he household of Stephanas, Crispus and Gaius. Paul was not sent primarily to baptize, but to preach the Word of the cross of Christ.
