Yes, I am going to whip this group into shape. We even have Colin, who I thought was as serious and conservative as Canon Law, joining in the fun.

I like the "positive vibe" comment as well. We have a couple of interesting threads going now. Maybe we can add to that...stay tuned.

I can imagine Cardinal Pell enjoying gourmet restaurants. Then get a stomach pain from overeating and not be able to attend the hearings into child abuse.

He didn't attend. Didn't they depose him in Rome rather than have him travel all the way back to Australia? That way he wouldn't have to miss his weekly reservation at his favorite restaurant.

They did indeed depose him in Rome. The commentary on this in Australia was deeply scathing.

I'm sorry, I've seen some vestments in my time, and I've even worn some pretty over-the-top ones, but the train on that red thing is ridiculous.

It reminds me of a bride I met once, when I was working in the cathedral, who, when asked why she had chosen to be married there, answered us very candidly that it was the only venue where her dress would fit through the door...

What sort of statement is he trying to make ?

I guess... at a stretch... I could charitably imagine that he is trying to make a statement about the majesty and grandeur of the church, the dignity which Christ has given it, and through it every member of it, and which he, himself a humble servant of all, represents to them as a part of the shared and communal identity of all Catholics.

It's a stretch, though.
