Two days ago, I finally saw the movie everybody's been talking about these past couple of years. I've been meaning to see it, but never did until now. So now I'm wondering if people here agree with my assessment of the movie. Actually I'm scared to ask, but still, I'm wondering.

What was your assessment?

I thought it was okay at the time, but in retrospect it had nothing on the previous movie "Facing the Giants" which I really need to watch again, because it had some really important teaching moments.

I thought that Fireproof had some insights, but didn't really go far enough in examining the dynamics of a marriage.

My opinion is that in some ways it comes dangerously close to just being a repeating of the same tired old "fix the man and the problem is fixed" message. The only thing that saved it from that in my opinion was the revelation at the end that it wa the mom that did the love dare in the parents relationship. The fact that the wife was having an emotional affair of sorts helped a little too although that had tones of being presented as a perfectly understandable(not necessarily right but understandable) response to the husband's bad behavior.

Overall the idea that one person making radical changes CAN turn a marriage around though is a good one as long as it's not pretended that that will fix everything every time.

And again, I don't agree with you Chaz that the wife's emotional affair was presented as "okay". It showed her friend warning her against the relationship, and she did recognize the wrongs of it herself. But it's too long ago since I saw it for me to recall the finer details.

Maybe OK is not really the right word. It was, IMO, though presented as not being a contributor to the cause of their problems as much as it was a result of them.

But did the affair come before or after the marriage problems? Wasn't the husband looking at porn, and that put a wedge between them? I don't agree that it's okay to have an emotional affair because your spouse is looking at porn.

I understand what you are saying, I think. The husband was screwing up, yes, but she didn't exactly contribute by starting an emotional affair - even though she probably wouldn't have done so under different circumstances - because that then made her unavailable for when her husband was ready to repent and apologize.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Meh. I wasn't impressed and don't recommend it to others. :|

I've only seen it once and for some reason, I'm not itching to see it again. After the church raved so much over it, I thought it really was a big deal. Meh, it isn't. But that's just me.

I liked Lord of the Rings better. It had more sword fights, more wide angle shots of amazing landscapes, more cavalry charges, and more undead kings riding dragons. I think someone should create a movie that has cool stuff like that and also throws in some marital advice or a message about salvation. Why do I have to sit through almost two hours of movie when in fact I could have just watched the trailer and then had the ending tacked on?

Apart from that, I don't like Christian self help voodoo. I would have liked it better if it had not worked but had led Kirk Cameron closer to God. I actually genuinely do believe that Lord of the Rings has a stronger Christian message without trying so hard.

For those who found it did help their marriage, well, fair enough. Hats off.

Well Lord of the Rings, while not specifically a salvation message does have a very strong good versus evil theme.

And the Narnia movies have all that good battle stuff and a very obvious allegory of the Christian message even tough that's not what Lewis intended.

I love LOTR. It was the one book that I kept with me (I had a paperbook which incorporated all three books, it was massive, lol) throughout my teens and into adulthoood. I was always looking for my "Aragorn" somewhere. :)

I agree...the church raves...then the movies are well, lets be nice...amateurish. The messages are....let be kind.....pat....the story is ...lets be kind....predictable.....

It makes me sad that the church rushes into support , its like an act of desperation

I agree with chaz no shocker....it was man use porn, men are prone...hmmm just realized porn and prone are similar words....cosmic

It's because it's a Christian movie that didn't look like it was filmed in Uncle Charleys basement.

Did you see "Facing the Giants" McScribe?

It's generally better, mostly because of a scene where the coach says after they lose a game, "Remember we said we'd praise God no matter what." it wasnt a bad football movie either.
