I am currently reading:
How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain

Author says that the "Lizard brain" we always heard about is old theory. The brain is a well integrated network rather than a pile of evolutionary parts.

And makes a distinction between Affect, emotion and mood. Affect includes both short term emotions and longer term moods.

I am only in chapter 3.

Who ever said "pile of evolutionary parts"?

Sounds like a quasi- religious strawman.

Was " lizard brain" ever actually a theory?

It is, what seems to be, a novel theory based on most recent data. It is an interesting and pretty easy read for a brain book. I am on board with the "construction" of our concepts and ok with no neural "fingerprint" emotions. But I am wanting to read more about our experience and management of emotions. The author has a few TED talks one can view.

I will also say this. It has given me a better appreciation and understanding of the power and limits of our ability to conceptualize.
That includes our religious conceptualizations.

And now it reminds me of something called conceptual nominalism.

The 1-star reviews at amazon are instructive ... particularly the long ones that deconstruct the text.

I see 4.6

I finished last night. She makes some very good points. I will work on a review.

I often hear that term in my dementia caregivers group when dealing with some of the behavoural issues.

A "classical theory" has been that the brain evolved through the species to become the human brain. The Lizard brain the most primitive relating with survival needs, the Amygdala dealing with emotions and the cerebral cortex dealing with more complex thoughts.
