I could buy it if it was just a few grand. Maybe even 10-20. But nobody engaged in legitimate business needs over $500,000 in emergency cash on hand.
Dont forget the gold!!! He was just following Hannity's advice!

At least the GOP is rushing to his side to help.

“The charges against Senator Menendez are serious and troubling,” [R-AR Senator Tom] Cotton said. “At the same time, the Department of Justice has a troubling record of failure and corruption in cases against public figures, from Ted Stevens to Bob McDonnell to Donald Trump to Bob Menendez the last time around.”

Cotton added that Menendez “should be judged by jurors and New Jersey’s voters, not by Democratic politicians who now view him as inconvenient to their hold on power.”

[R-FL Senator Marco] Rubio later added that “in America guilt is decided by a jury, not politicians in fear of their party losing a Senate seat.”

(Maybe these guys can tell their comrades in the House that politicians should not be judging politicians.) Of course, the party of law and order is willing to go even further for one of their own.

Republicans have gone quite a bit further than that; just about all of their leading presidential candidates have said they will continue to support Trump even if he’s convicted. Even a conviction wouldn’t be disqualifying.

I really don't understand the claim that this is political expediency. Menedez won his current term after being indicted the first time. There is absolutely no reason to believe he wouldn't win again if he won, and even if he were to be primaried there is no real chance a republican would win.

....Sen Cotten misses the main point: the Senator can no longer serve the residents of New Jersey effectively. [...not that he is a victim of the DOJ]

Fellow NJ Sen Booker got it right IMO:
“The details of the allegations against Senator Menendez are of such a nature that the faith and trust of New Jerseyans as well as those he must work with in order to be effective have been shaken to the core,” Mr. Booker said, adding: “I believe stepping down is best for those Senator Menendez has spent his life serving.”

Lock 'em up!

But you have to wonder why they're not locking up half of congress for the same thing. This dude just got caught I guess. Most of it seems pretty out in the open though.
He has become expendable. This is not his 1st scandal

Sen. Menendez is accused of being an unregistered agent of Egypt’s government in updated indictment

The new indictment said the conspiracy occurred from January 2018 to June 2022, when Menendez was alleged to have “promised to take and took a series of acts on behalf of Egypt, including on behalf of Egyptian military and intelligence officials.”
One might have thought that he would have got wise after his near-miss in ‘18?
So crooked and stupid?

The indictment ties Menendez and his wife to three business executives: Wael Hana, Jose Uribe and real estate developer Fred Daibes, all of whom also are charged.

Sen. Bob Menendez co-defendant pleads guilty to conspiracy, will cooperate with prosecutors

Businessman Jose Uribe pleaded guilty to seven counts in connection with the alleged corruption probe, including conspiracy to commit bribery, honest services fraud, obstruction of justice and more.

Uribe was accused of buying a luxury car for Nadine Menendez after her previous car was destroyed when she struck and killed a man crossing the street. She did not face criminal charges in connection with that crash.

Uribe allegedly gave the Mercedes to Menendez and his wife as he sought help with a criminal investigation into his associates being run out of the New Jersey state attorney general’s office. In exchange, Menendez is accused of calling then-New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal directly about the matter.

... this just in... Menendez is still in the Senate. If only he was a Republican... sigh

It doesn't seem that would make a difference. Remember, the GOP has latched onto "presumed innocent".

At least the GOP is rushing to his side to help.

The calls for him to resign came mostly, if not entirely, from Democrats. There is also a major effort currently underway to try and primary him if he tries to run again. If anything, it's the Republicans supporting him, because they see this as a way to unseat him at the election.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and his wife have been indicted on federal bribery charges offenses, Justice Department officials announced Friday morning.

Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez, allegedly accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes from New Jersey business executives in exchange for using the senator’s power and influence to help them, according to the indictment.

Federal prosecutors had previously tried Menendez on separate federal corruption charges. That trial ended in November 2017 with a deadlocked jury. The senator won reelection in 2018.

The indictment ties Menendez and his wife to three business executives: Wael Hana, Jose Uribe and real estate developer Fred Daibes, all of whom also are charged.

“Over $480,000 in cash—much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe—was discovered in the home

Loans. Those are just loans he and his wife and his associates gave each other. Loans and loan repayments.

No different than Adam Schiff helping Steve Garvey (R) in the California Senate race. Strategy just to win the election.
