Psalms 103:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” Where do our souls come from? Considering the context in which the Bible speaks of our souls, one can reasonably surmise they come from God, least of all since there is nothing in the Bible to suggest that our souls just pop into us after we’re alive. Genesis 2:7 says, of Adam, “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” By the process of elimination, Adam’s soul was in the breath that Go breathed into him. (Genesis 2: 22 says, “And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.” Since the Bible doesn’t go into any more detail than that in reporting Gid’s creation of woman, we may surmise that Eve was made the same way, with God breathing life into the woman. And along with that breath was probably a soul, since the Bible doesn’t infer that only men have souls.)

In reading from the Bible, one may surmise that our souls, which God gave to us, are pliable, that is, they are prone to sin. Ezekiel 18:4 says that the soul who sins shall die. Well, it isn’t God that sins. Any sin that man commits is a result of Satan’s influence, and based on Ezekiel 18:4 the soul is not invulnerable to sin; the soul can also sin.

What is to stop the soul from sinning? God has left that task up to our heart and minds. James 1:21 says, “Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” The Word is of God, through Jesus. Who can understand and follow up on God’s word other than our hearts and minds? Our souls will act based on whatever is in our hearts and minds. Since it’s possible for our souls to die, one can surmise that our souls won’t go their own way if we sin; they’ll be right there with the sins we commit.

Jesus in Mark 12:30 says, “’And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” Our souls will love God if our hearts and minds and our bodies love Him. Whether we act out of righteousness or out of sin, our souls are our accomplices.
