I know how you feel. When I was in the throes of depression I would often mention that "I don't want to live like this." And I meant it. Have you seen a psychiatrist or other therapist? You may need some help to get past this.

I have, to no avail. I would be remarkably better though if I wasn't so tired.

I had my thyroid checked last year because of extreme fatigue. Thankfully, they discovered it's under-active. One prescription later, and I'm back on my feet!

I had my thyroid tested too; blood work came out normal.

grey in the beard is quite sexy in my opinion ... getting older is tough, it seems once the 40's roll around the changes in life/health are constant and can be depressing, however, I think that helps us to become our more authentic self because it's not about the perfect body/optimum health/great financial status at this stage, it's about the heart and its contents :)

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling.
A few health related things to consider (if thyroid and anemia have already been checked):
Serum testosterone - many middle aged men start to see decline with effect on mood and energy
If you are in a northern climate, Vitamin D deficiency is common - get checked or begin 2- 5,000 IU daily.
If you don't feel normal energy after appropriate treatment for sleep apnea, sometimes people are prescribed modafinil (Provigil) or other stimulants. Your primary care doctor may not be familiar or comfortable with this and you may need to see a sleep specialist.
Any medications that may be making you tired?
cytomel (T3) is used by some psychiatrists for depression
some antidepressants ( like wellbutrin-buproprion) are more stimulating.

sometimes lots of dark green veggies.. DAILY and deliberately, works miracles. Another suggestion - pay attention to what you are watching on TV and listening too.. deliberately watch and read funny stuff. Also be mindful of following politics excessively or anything that just steals your joy.

Grey hair, dye it.
lethargic- Eat well, and do a bit of exercise. Give up the booze and junk food.
Get some sunshine on your skin for vitamin D

Swipe some your wife's moisturiser it helps (unless its Kmart one).

In your 40's your skin stops producing stuff it needs and you need to replenish it artificially same with your hair

You'll feel 5 years younger.

So sorry to hear about this. Have things gotten any better for you, nightflight? Definitely take some of the health advice above, and definitely get a sleep study done.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, my husband has a grey beard, which matches his grey hair. So, if he were to shave off his beard because he didn't like the grey, he'd have to shave his entire head too, which I wouldn't go for. I like the grey. He pretty much started going grey in his early 20's though- blames it on me.
