Yes the democratic party used to be socially conservative and racist primarily in the south, but things change governments change, parties change. The republican party has taken up that position post civil rights it also should be noted that David Barton is not a legitimate historian, rather a Christian Nationalist who misrepresents history to argue for a theocratic state.

I am saddened by the misreprensentations the media has given certain races of people. I am saddened that there are some many falsehoods within the media that has been taught.

You're spamming those videos, but I'm glad to see someone point out how racism pervaded social conservatism for the last 150 years. Good thing those socially liberal Republicans in the 1870s did something to punish the conservatives for slavery.

It's always inspiring to see a young person begin to get a handle on history. When they start to realize that things have not always been the way they are today, it often leads to the realization that things can be different in the future.

Did you know that the 11th president of the United States, James K. Polk, was a pro-slavery Democrat who started the Mexican-American war as a means to obtain Alta California?

Heads will explode when people realize that a guy who liked to keep Africans as slaves fought a war against Hispanics and his prize became a bastion of social progressives.

I suggest you look up the Republican Southern Strategy. Bascially, before the Civil Rights movement Dems were broken into two groups, social liberals and social conservatives (the Dixiecrats). The civil rights movement was supported by socially liberal Democrats and opposed by the Dixiecrats. Similar lines were drawn in the Republican party. After the dust settled ofthe Civil Rights movement the Dixiecrats wanted to split from the Dems and the Reps welcomed them (the Southern Strategy) as a result many socially liberal Reps switched to the Dems. This is why the Civil Rights movement marks the switch from Dems being a southern/rural party and Reps being a northern/urban party to the exact opposite.

That's true. Although ironcially, the person most instrumental in enacting civil rights legislation was a southern Democrat--Lyndon Johnson. As a Senator, LBJ had an undistinguished record on civil rights, but he did a total 180 when he became President. It was his considerable legislative skills that got the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act passed. Morally, it was the right thing to do, though it pretty much extinguished the Democratic Party as the party of choice for southern white voters.

I think the key here is right in the title of this thread "History" it really has no context today. The sad reality is it's another party, the republican party which has done more damage to this country in the last 40 some years than any foreign terrorists could ever dream of, they are essentially an anti-American party. Oh sure they are excellent at "branding" themselves as the chest beating "100% American" party.. very much akin to Wal-mart's patriotic merchandise, never mind the fact most of it is manufactured by practically slave labor in 3rd world countries. Essentially the republican party's goal is to reverse not only civil and voting rights but essentially everything modern America has come to appreciate, from social security, Medicare and Medicaid to unions, affirmative action, minimum wage and worker safety standards the list goes on.. Creating in it's place an America of more billionaires and a decimated non existent middle class.
