Sorry to bump such an old thread but I recently gave away my 8-bit NES and the last two games I had for it which were my favorites.

Genghis Khan
Destiny of an Emperor

I also loved the Dragon Warrior series with III being the apex.

Nobunaga's Ambition is pretty good as well!

The thing I loved most about NES Dragon Warrior III was the Squirt Gun item (anyone remember that?). Maybe because I'm just a weird person, but walking up to random townspeople, using that on them, and getting the replies (some of which were downright hilarious) was a really funny sidequest.

Sadly, in the remake of DWIII for the GBA, although there were a few interesting things that didn't make it into the NES version (i.e. the entire personality system, the real occupation of the Ashalam dancers, what could happen to a male Hero in Ashalam, how your female Hero could get the Amazon temperament from the female pirate captain, etc. . .), the Squirt Gun was removed as an item and sidequest. I miss it. :(
