• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I just started zoloft 50mg five days ago, but the last few days it seems after I take it my brain seems to be overloaded, and I have to lay down for several hours, I know it's suppose to take a few weeks to take effect, but I don't think I can continue at 50mg, so I'm going to ask my doc for 25mg instead.

How long til zoloft helped you and at what mg ?

Daryl

UPDATE: goingon 4 weeks of zoloft, the side effects have lessened, I started 50mg, then 75mg, then 100mg, but it seems 50mg has less side effects.
It's helping with my OCD but I'm still hoping it will help with the depression.

zoloft.com web site said this about this medication:

"Some of your symptoms might start to improve within one to two weeks, but it could take up to eight weeks, depending on the person. Don't get discouraged.
You might experience some side effects, but side effects are likely to lessen over time. Not everyone gets side effects.
Studies show that Zoloft is not addictive or habit-forming.
In studies, Zoloft is not associated with weight gain."

When I took it, I did find that I gain a few pounds. This may not be the same for everyone.

Hi There!

I've taken Zoloft for about 3 years....I am very sensitive to medications so my doctor started me on 25mg (half a tablet) and then after a couple of weeks i went up to 50mg...I am now on 150mg. I don't really have any side-effects with this med...and i've been on about 10 others!

I don't feel un-depressed taking it....but nothing has ever helped me much cos i have other past stuff that i'm trying to deal with. However, i can say that i had a little hissy-fit about taking meds and went off it, and i was noticiable worse off it. so...i must do something!

I actually need to gain weight, so I'm hoping for that side effect.
How many mg of zoloft were you on?
what side effects did you have and how long til it started helping you when you took it ?

Actually, this was about 11 years ago that I was on it, so I don't remember what the dosage was. I don't recall having any adverse side effects from it. I'm on Lexapro now and feel like it is helping. I tried going without it last fall and it wasn't a good thing at all.

Hi,

I took zoloft for almost a year for post partum depression. Started at 25 mg. for 8 days then went to 50 mg. It was strange at first like my thoughts were just racing... then the brakes would be put on. Then it evened out after about a month. It was awesome for about 8 months... I felt better, more even moods, it helped OCD symptoms too. Then I started feeling agitated after 8 months with some anger. So I tapered off and now I am off of it. I think it is different for everyone. Give it a chance, but, if you start feeling angry after 6 months time call your doctor right away. Take care!!

I know what you mean by racing thougths, I took 25 mg in the morning and then 50 mg in the evening with my 5mg of zyprexa, was asleep for 12 hours, and woke up with the racing thoughts but also a feeling of my mind being out of control, wich is a horrible feeling I don't want to have again, I don't think my body can tolerate any more than 25 mg. I see my doc today and will talk to her about it.

Zoloft saved my life twice. First for depression...I think it took about 3 weeks before it worked and until I got used to it...it gave me lots of energy. It really did help me regain my sanity.

The 2nd time I took it was for anxiety attacks. I havn't had one since, that was about 2 years ago. I started on 25, and at one time upped to 75 but couldn't tolerate that much. I'm not on it now but I'm thankful that I was on it for a time.

I've been taking Zoloft for seven years now, and it seemed to take effect almost immediately. I'm talking several hours after I took it for the first time. I'm guessing that was the placebo effect, though, so I don't know what to tell you.

As for side effects, the only ones that I've gotten are weight gain and dry mouth. But they aren't terrible enough for me to want to get off of Zoloft.

I'm in my 4th week of zoloft, the side effects have lessened, I have been on 50mg, then 75mg, then, 100mg, but it seems 50mg has less side effects.
So far it helps with my OCD, but hoping that it starts helping more with my depression.
I have been on most other antidepressants so I figure I will give this med the full 8 weeks.

CynicalAgnostic,

It may not have been the "placebo" effect so much as a temporary spike from the fact that you had done something to try to improve yourself. There are genuine chemical reactions in the brain when you do something positive. The problem with depression is that those effects don't last and get quickly wiped out by other chemical and emotional factors.

Did that make sense?

Cheers,

-RB
