In Zechariah 4, we learn that God's work on earth will be completed through the power of the Holy Spirit. "...'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' saith the Lord Almighty." (Zechariah 4:6)
"Then I asked the angel, 'What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?' Again I asked him, 'What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?' He replied, 'Do you not know what these are?' 'No, my lord,' I said. So he said, 'These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.'" (Zechariah 4:11-14)
Zechariah saw one lampstand with seven lights and two olive trees with golden pipes connected between the trees and the lights. (See Zachariah 4:2-5) He was told these two symbols serve the Lord of all the earth. Now, Zechariah knew the following: Clear olive oil was daily used for the seven lamps in the temple and priests put the oil in them every morning and evening. But the specifications of Revelation 11 are slightly different:
John saw:
1. Two olive trees
2. Two lampstands
3. They stand or serve before the Lord of the earth.
In the wilderness sanctuary, there was one lampstand with seven lights on it in the tabernacle. One lampstand represents one agency from which the light of God's truth shines -- and the light is complete (seven lights). The lampstand in the ancient tabernacle represented the "anointed" agency of God spreading His truth: His chosen people. They were to carry His Word to the Gentiles. (Isaiah 42:6)
In Zechariah's day, there was still one lampstand with seven lights on it. But Zechariah saw something different about the lampstand as it stood before the throne of God in heaven. Instead of priests putting the oil into the lamps, God had two olive trees automatically filling the lamps with oil. God kept the lamps burning by having living trees fill the lampstand.
God wanted Zechariah to understand that the living trees, producing ever-flowing oil, represented the work of the Holy Spirit. This is how God kept truth alive -- not by man's power. This is why Zechariah was told, "Not by might but by My Spirit" that God's truth would be kept shining throughout the earth. Those two trees producing oil represent the work of the Holy Spirit throughout the earth. There were two works of the Holy Spirit: the early rain and latter rain.
