• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

hi,
They say those with Autism have an obsession or high interest in one area/topic. What is your kids/your obsession or interest?

Mine is Christianity & Music

Great question!

My son is an animal lover...specifically elephants. His favorite place is the zoo, his favorite shows are "Be The Creature" & "Zoboomafoo" and his favorite books are about animals....by the way...he's 4 years old.

He's not related to me, but I had a friend who was diagnosed with mild autism. He was in an engineering class and he had a huge obsession in gears. Like this here: http://www.ddewey.net/pics/art/gear.jpg

That picture would keep him occupied for hours and hours and hours...

My autistic son loves all kinds of things and is always jumping from one thing to another. For the longest time (and still somedays) Bambi. Watched the movie over and over...he now brings home big book of Bambi from the library at school. Thomas the Tank Engine was another favourite. For now, he's not interested. He loves colouring in books. He has a new interest. Cabbage Patch Kids. He'd taken the one I had in my room out of its box and has claimed her as his. Sleeps with her and has her sit on his bed. He really had his eye on a little baby one in WalMart the other day....guess we'll see what Santa says. :p Right now, he's also into Looney Tunes. He loves all the characters there. He really reminds me of my dad. :D

Christianity. Probably 70% of my thoughts are directly about Christian topics (theology, christology, sotierology, etc, etc) and another 25% are on typical secular topics but in how they relate to Christianity (WWJD kind of stuff, how will this or that affect my faith, how can I spiritualize this activity, etc) and the remaining 5% are purely secular thoughts.

I don't see a forum for brain injury/autism but then my son has a double disorder. Before the brain hit he loved anything that lit up but now he is obsessed with fans.Even having us draw pictures of fans.He has about 3 in his room that we are continually replacing. It must be the sound, calming, movement.
Mine is 14 and still watches Teletubbies!

You know, I myself do not have autism, but I have always been greatly intrested by the workings of the assembly line, or anytype of "line.

I live about 2 hours away from the Orlando Science Center, and I used to have a year round pass there. They have this setup for kids to play on. One child bikes on a stationary bike, this makes the whole contraption move. The other children assign themselves jobs (or, when I was there, I assigned myself taskmaster and told others what to do, I am a natural born leader and love to be the first to do something, or to use my skills to tell others what to do or whatever) doing such things as taking this little wodden crates and collecting oranges from fake orange trees. The then filled crate is taken to the drop-off, where the oranges are placed on little metal rollers that run the crate down to this pit that the oranges are dropped into. The crate is then returned to a pile of empty crates ready to be filled again. The ornages are pumped back into the trees by the bicycler, and a series of tubes.

That used to keep me occupied for days, and days. I loved to think about it, and I'd still play on it if they'd let me...

Also, those little wooden train sets, you know the ones, with the little wodden tracks with grooves in them. Those are the best in the world. I still play with those. I used spend hours making the tracks more and more complex, and longer. I also had one of those "Robotix" kits made by LEGO. I still have that in fact.... I spent hours, weeks and days making impossibly complex models. When I was in engineering I passed the final for the semester because I used a collection of legos to make a scale, working space shuttle and launch pad, complete with control tower, and the little mover that takes the shuttle to the launch pad (the mover was programmed with a computer to take it up the track, and push the shuttle onto the pad, it was cool).

Anything of that sort of nature thrills me.

Since become a Christian, I have made Jesus the object of my obsession. I went through a period of time that I spent hours on end studying the hebrew language so that I could read the Old Testament in its original language. But after spending many hours on it and realizing that understanding the entire Bible in my own language was actually more important, I then changed my obsession to that of Christian music. Which is when I discovered Rich Mullins and then I spent many, many hours reading everything I could about him. He really was a person worth knowing more about. Now I keep saying I'm going to teach myself how to play the piano but I've decided that I would rather just own a library of Contemporary Christian songs so that I can sing along to them. I would just love to own every single Christian song that has ever been recorded. Since I have an MP3 CD player, I would love to create MP3 CDs of all Christian artists. I'd want to have a Rich Mullins MP3 disc of all of the songs that he's recorded. And I'd also own a Third Day CD, and a MercyMe CD, and on and on until I have them all. Wouldn't that be neat? But that's another thing that would just take a lot of time (and money!). I'd love to one day be wealthy enough that I could quit work and just work on these little "obsessions" of mine. :)
