I remember reading one of the household gurus once (hints from heloise or ask maryellen - you know who I mean). Anyhow - she pointed out that we stress way too much over cleaning for company - who's going to get down on their knees to see if we vacuumed under the couch. Her suggestion - clean all the surfaces at eye level (sitting and standing), then take a rag moistened with pinesol and wave it around in all the rooms. People will think you cleaned for hours.

I like this thread ... I hadn't run across it before.

Since you quoted Chesterton ... it remnded me of another of his statements.

G.K. Chesterton said of himself, that he was so fat that when he got the urge to exercise he had to lie down until it went away.

In Raising Helen(a fav film of mine) the Pastor(John Corbett who reminds me of my dear husband) says to Helen played by Kate Hudson.. "I am a SEXY man of GOD!"
hahahahaha..see the movie,it's cute.My Husband loves this quote and uses it quite often now.
