CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I once spent the better part of an evening getting petty with a girl while I was blasted drunk. It turned out she was in a wheelchair most of the time, and I had hit on her the one night she went out on her braces. She was horribly unnatractive and I was so gone I didn't even remember her when I sobered up - the wheelchair completely threw me, so when she saw me in school and was all making eyes at me and stuff I was completely oblivious. I found out a few years later and wanted to stab myself in the brain with a chevy stepsider. That was pretty low and reduced my moral or intellectual character. #3

I don't think i've ever done anything that makes me feel degraded. Its what other people say that is degrading which annoys me.

Though philosophy can be a Bi*ch , it does not care how others are it just rather puts truthfully how things are no matter how ugly, its not suppose to be a pretty thing but if people take offence in philosophy then obviously philosophy isn't for them.
Anyway people degrade themselves all the time , I don't.

And that's every stinking one of us, not just half. Action adventures emasculate us, horror movies desensitize us. All movies are porno after a fashion. And television. It's too passive. You don't have to do anything to get the emotional payoff. It's just presented to you and you just sit and consume it like a Sheik being fed by his concubines. You don't know or care how the food gets there just as long as the ladies keep shovelling.

I don't find it degrading because I don't make any from it .
But I absolutely agree that pleasures is not the answer to lifes problems same to as looking for love . Clem have you ever though of looking at buddhism , I think you would do well there if you believe the same thing because in principle , desire is suffering .

I have, and the same problems I have with other religeons are present with buddhism. The idea of past lives and stuff. It's not that desire is suffering, it's that humans refuse to do the work that is a part of becoming truly civilized. We either embrace our ancient needs or dispise them. There are very simple, elegant and logical answers to the kinds of problems religeon is used to deal with, and it doesn't require anything we don't already possess. But, like the therapists say, you have to WANT to change.

Buddhism embraces freedom as true spirituality without it then how is suppose to have clarity, I don't see how other religions are the same when freedom is only what past lives have told freedom is , the problem with this is now these past lives have influenced an authoritative position in religion through there doctrines, something that I don't like .

Well, my point is that I can't see a need for a particular belief system when simple use of the tools I have at hand should suffice.

I am degraded in the fact that I can't get over my insecurity about my weight. (Which is by no means terribly heavy.)
I don't mind being insecure, I am embarassed and shamed by my inability to rise above it.
Other than that, I was once cruel to a poor marine just out of boot camp who really liked me. It took me two years to realize that I probably misinterpreted his behavior horribly.

Some movies and t.v. shows are stupid. So don't watch them.
Some are ok. Nothing is degrading unless you allow it to be.

What I feel degrading is explicit sex on TV where I can avoid it but only to a point. I can avoid specific shows and not the stuff in between ads and the like. Being forced to see stuff like that on TV is degrading. The alternative is to not watch TV and that really isn't fair.
