Matthew 24:
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.
10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.
13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Mark 13:
12 Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.
13 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
Luke 21:
16 You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.
17 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake.
18 But not a hair of your head shall be lost.
19 By your patience possess your souls.
Hatred "for His Name's sake" indicates that at some point the well documented hatred of Jews will be re-directed towards Christians "in every nation". This leads to Paul's cryptic statement:
2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.
Historically, widespread Christian persecution ended when nations began recognizing Christianity as an official state religion. While the Elect are only a remnant, they will experience what has occurred at times throughout history, Christians persecuting Christians who do not fall in line with an official government mandate. The man of lawlessness will cater to a Christian majority, while persecuting those who refuse to compromise the Gospel for the sake of religious unity and tolerance.
