Okay so I think most of us have been there where we've been thrown with the "at least I don't believe in a fairytale" line. Have any of you managed to say anything successful in return? Any comebacks? The only one I've got is this :

"You can call Christianity a fairtytale all you want. Unfortunately I think you're living in a fairtyle too. Except thankfully in my story I'm told how I got here and where I'm going to unlike your fairy tale where the author seemed to "lack" telling you how your existence came into to being. Seems like that part was just "left out".

And Were living in a fairy tale how? You can explain how you got here through stories which have no proof. A book tells you that humans were created 6,000 years ago. Why should I believe that over a book like the quran?

I think what she meant by fairytale is that we also don't know how we got here. Point to the big bang all you want, where did that come from? And when you answer that, answer where THAT came from. The only logical deduction is that something always existed, and from there everything else came. What is that thing? The energy of the big bang? The universe in singularity? Prove it. Sounds like a fairytale to me.

As for why not other religions, assuming the premise that all religions are valid, only Jesus claimed to be God and rose up from the dead. That seems a little different doesn't it? As for why you should believe that, its a completely different question if you want to ask it...

When I get the fairy tale accusation (which is really a middle school and high school thing), I ask the person to explain to me what fairty tale I believe in. It can be really humorous to hear a non Christian try to explain why my beliefs are stupid when they've never opened a Bible before.

Worst-case scenario: The person walks away from the confrontation with a better understanding of what I believe.

Best-case scenario: One time when I used this response, it opened up an entire dialogue in which the person who tried to insult me actually became a Christian within a month's time and started going to my church. God is awesome.

Jesus claimed to be god, but muhammad claimed that he was a messenger of god. So whats the difference? Why should I believe in any of those guys. If someone came up to you in todays time and said i am the son of god, you would think he's crazy, but back then nobody had a clue and would beleive anything.

Nobody had a clue? Which is why the bases of science, philosophy, medicine, architecture, engineering, and agriculture can all be found in those times. But they were all just idiot cavemen, right?

If you want to be a conspiracy theorist, some say they were technologically the same or superior to modern tech, having planes(or at least gliders) and such. But that's if you are a conspiracy theorist(which I am not, just fun discussion).

Well if you're a messenger of God... then you speak for God. If you are God, well... You're God. I think that's a pretty big difference.

You ask "why should I believe in any of those guys?" I can't speak for muslims on why you should believe in Muhammad, but I can say that I would trust Jesus because he is the son of God. Is your question why you should believe that?

If someone came up to me and said I am the son of God I might think he's crazy, but I may pay attention if he starts performing miracles (Of course, even then I may be a bit skeptical and even consider whether or not he is anti-christ.)

Even if they were less intelligent than we are today, I would hardly say that they "don't have a clue." Jesus was crucified for a reason you know. The pharisees accused him of Blasphemy on account of him not fulfilling their interpretation of the messiah prophecy. So not everyone just "believed anything." I would say however that the people who did believe in Jesus's claims speak volumes for his case simply through their conviction. If the disciples didn't completely trust in jesus would they have died for him while preaching? Wouldn't even a sliver of doubt manifest itself into action when faced with death?

Such a statement is chronological snobbery. People back then were human beings with as much cognitive function as people today. Or do you forget that great thinkers such as Socrates and Plato lived even earlier than when the Biblical New Testament took place?

Specifically concerning Muhammad, he was a warrior who used his self-perpetuated religious position to conquer other city-states and gain wealth. He received all of his "divine messages" in private, and simply did not perform miracles. What Muhammad tried to tell the human race, in a nutshell, was the same as every other non-Christian religion: "Be a good person and you will go to heaven".

Christ came here to tell us that being a good person simply isn't enough, and he offered us a way out.

Fairy tales do not become religion, as religion does not become fairy tales. Through the course of history, man has been able to separate this. We know Jack and the bean stalk or little red ridding hood aren't religion, and we know that the pagan gods were worshiped.

This idea that we've confused a book of fiction for reality is absolute nonsense, and if it is, then we'll just fade away when we die and there will have been no gain or loss by believing in it.

Remember this, that the goal of an atheist is always to equal the playing field. The need to dig a hole for you to stand in when they themselves are in a pit of their own.
