Continued from: YHWH's Table (Part 11)
In the last portion of this study, we continued to work through Leviticus 23, which outlines YHWH's eternal appointed times. We left off with Yom Teruah, which brings us to Yom Kippurim. Let's dig right in.
All of the verses, that I know of, which describe what is to take place on this Moed, appear in only three places within the Torah, Leviticus 23, Numbers 29, and Leviticus 16. I will cover every verse known to me on this subject.
(CLV) Lv 23:26
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:
(CLV) Lv 23:27
Then on the tenth of this seventh month, it is the day of propitiatory shelters. (הכפרים) It shall be a holy meeting for you, and you will humble (ועניתם) your souls and bring near (והקרבתם) a fire offering to Yahweh.
(הכפרים) H3725 Kippurim, which Gesenius defines as redemptions or atonements.
One of the reasons that I use the CLV is that they claim to use the same English word for the same Hebrew, or Greek, word each time. They used the word "shelters" in this case.
Kippurim is the plural form of Kippur.
(כפר) H3722 Kippur which means cover.
It looks like the CLV shined through this time.
(ועניתם) H6031 Anah which can mean humble.
(והקרבתם) H7126 Qarab (קרב) which mean to come near. This is the root of Korban (קרבן).
Another reason why I use the CLV, is that it claims to be a literal version.
It's interesting that in the order of the words in the Hebrew manuscripts, the word Qarab is placed with your souls, not with fire. It appears that YHWH wants us to bring our souls near. It appears that this "literal" translation failed in this case. We should be careful not to let translators tell us what YHWH is trying to tell us, but to prove it out for ourselves.
(CLV) Lv 23:28
You shall do no work at all on this very day, for it is the day of propitiatory shelters (כפרים) so as to make a propitiatory shelter (לכפר) over you before Yahweh your Elohim.
(כפרים) Kippurim coverings
(כפר) Kippur cover
(CLV) Lv 23:29
For every soul who is not humbled (תענה) on this very day will be cut off from his kinsmen.
(תענה) H6031 Anah which can mean humble.
(CLV) Lv 23:30
And every soul who does any work on this very day, I will destroy that soul from among his people.
(CLV) Lv 23:31
You shall do no work at all. It is an eonian statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
(CLV) Lv 23:32
It is a sabbath of cessation for you, and you will humble (ועניתם) your souls. On the ninth day of the month in the evening, from evening until evening shall you cease for your sabbath.
(ועניתם) H6031 Anah which can mean humble.
No mention of sin, sacrifice, lamb, or Annointed Priest yet. Let's move on to BaMidbar.
(CLV) Num 29:7
On the tenth of this seventh month you shall come to have a holy meeting, and you will humble (ועניתם) your souls; you shall do no work at all.
(ועניתם) H6031 Anah which can mean humble.
(CLV) Num 29:8
You will bring near (והקרבתם) an ascent (עלה) offering to Yahweh, a fragrant odor, one bull calf of the herd, one ram, seven year-old he-lambs (flawless shall they be for you),
(והקרבתם) (קרב) H7126 Karab which means to come near. This is the root of (קרבן) Korban.
(עלה) Olah H5930 which means ascent.
Here we have he-lamb yearlings, but not in association with sin.
(CLV) Num 29:9
and as their approach present (ומנחתם) of flour mingled with oil, three tenths for the young bull, two tenths for the one ram,
(ומנחתם) Mincha (מנחה) H4503 which means present, or gift.
(CLV) Num 29:10
a tenth, a tenth for each he-lamb of the seven lambs,
(CLV) Num 29:11
and one hairy goat as a sin offering aside from the sin offering of the propitiatory shelters (הכפרים) and the regular ascent (ועלת) offering with its approach present (ומנחתה) and their libations.
(הכפרים) Kippurim H3725 covers.
(ועלת) Olah (עלה) H5930 which means ascent.
(ומנחתה) Mincha (מנחה) H4503 which means present, or gift.
Clearly the sin goat is apart from the Olah and the Mincha.
On to Vayikra 16.
(CLV) Lv 16:1
Yahweh spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron when they came near before Yahweh and died.
(CLV) Lv 16:2
Yahweh said to Moses: Speak to Aaron your brother that he must not come at just any time into the holy place, inside the curtain before the propitiatory shelter (הכפרת) which is on the coffer, so that he may not die, for in the cloud shall I appear over the propitiatory shelter (הכפרת).
(הכפרת) Kippur (כפר) H3722 which means cover.
Now the scripture speaks of the Anointed Priest, and the covering; but this covering appears to be the Ark of the covenant, not blood. So is the covering of the blood; or could it be that the covering is in the covenant, sealed in blood?
I touched on this subject in Part 5 of this series: YHWH's Table (Part 5)
(CLV) Lv 16:3
In this way shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a bull calf of the herd, as a sin offering, and a ram as an ascent (לעלה) offering.
(לעלה) Olah (עלה) H5930 which means ascent.
Notice that a bull is brought forth by the Anointed Priest for sin, not the ram.
(CLV) Lv 16:4
The holy linen tunic shall he put on, and linen breeches, they shall be over his flesh, and with a linen sash shall he gird himself, and with a linen turban shall he be turbaned; they are holy garments. He will bathe his flesh in water and put them on.
(CLV) Lv 16:5
From the congregation of the sons of Israel shall he take two hairy goats as a sin offering and one ram as an ascent (לעלה) offering.
(לעלה) Olah (עלה) H5930 which means ascent.
Notice two goats for sin, not the ram.
(CLV) Lv 16:6
Aaron will bring near the young bull of the sin offering which is for himself, and he will make a propitiatory shelter (וכפר) about himself and about his house.
Kippur (כפר) H3722 which means cover.
Notice that the bull is for the sin of the Anointed Priest.
(CLV) Lv 16:7
He will take the two hairy goats and stand them before Yahweh at the opening of the tent of appointment.
(CLV) Lv 16:8
Then Aaron will cast lots over the two hairy goats, one lot for Yahweh and one lot for the goat of departure.
(CLV) Lv 16:9
Aaron will bring near the hairy goat over which the lot for Yahweh comes up and make it a sin offering.
A hairy goat for sin.
(CLV) Lv 16:10
Yet the hairy goat over which the lot for the goat of departure comes up, it shall stay alive before Yahweh to make a propitiatory shelter (לכפר) over it and to send it away as the goat of departure to the wilderness.
(לכפר) Kippur (כפר) H3722 which means cover.
The live goat makes covering.
was this goat sacrificed? If so in what way? If so it was a bloodless sacrifice; but scripture doesn't call it a (זבח) zebah, which Gesenius describes as the flesh of slain animals.
We saw in Part 3 of this series, that at that time the zebah was not used in association with sin.
