Sigh, how many times has it been said from the pulpits, "Jesus, the friend of sinners!" They say it with such glee and volume! As if this is one of the most wonderful sides of Yeshua. As if he was friends with everyone he encountered in the N.T. They say it in a way that means that Yeshua wants to be the playful big brother of all people, including you, as if Yeshua walked around with a big smile constantly. I've heard "pastors," say that Yeshua would put a disciple into a headlock and give him a playful knuckle sandwich! I've heard it said that Yeshua laughed, told jokes, winked, or said some things in a joking manner.
My question is, where do they come up with such ridiculous things? They don't get it from Scripture. Scripture says he was a man of sorrow. He was bruised, beaten, and punched in the face by laughing guards. They forcibly pushed a crown of thorns into his skull, mocked him, and scourged him (A very brutal ordeal. The Romans wanted the scourging to be so harsh that it helped speed up the death on a cross), had his beard pulled out and was hung on a cross, the most painful way to die in the history of mankind. I don't see any humor in all of that! Nothing about the life of Yeshua was "fun and games."
In Gen 11:6, Jehovah said, "...And now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined doing." That is exactly what these "pastors" are doing! They have no restraints on what they have imagined about Jeshua and then speak to their audience. Anything goes! Nothing is off-limits. They seem to forget that Yeshua is Jehovah in the flesh! They have no fear of Jehovah!
They say this as if one of the Apostles wrote it down! As if it was a "positive attribute," "a really good side" of Yeshua. It is said as a compliment! What a wonderful man Yeshua was!

Where does this come from?

Mat 11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of publicans and sinners...'

This wasn't a compliment, a positive statement! This was not a doctrine! This is an insult by the Pharisees and scribes! This was a statement meant to discredit Yeshua! This wasn't saying, "Yeshua, a friend of sinners, hip hip, hooray!" This is the only place where "friend" and "sinner" are in the same statement.

Mat 9:10-11 And it came to pass that as Yeshua was eating in a house, many publicans and sinners also joined him in the meal. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked the disciples, "Why does your Rabbi eat with publicans and sinners?"

We all know the publicans were despised by the Jewish people. But when the Pharisees called a Jew a "sinner," they didn't mean it in a way that "all Jews were regular sinners." They meant that these "sinners" were the worst type of sinners. This would include criminals, prostitutes, alcoholics, rapists, murderers, etc. In the eyes of the Pharisees, these people were wretched, evil Jews who were unredeemable. In Lk 7:36-39, the woman was or had been a prostitute. When they said "publicans and sinners," they meant those they called the worst type of Jews in morals and character. The Pharisees would ignore those who fit in that group. Wouldn't it be nice if these "pastors" would bother doing a little study rather than standing on stage with a big smile and repeating the company line, "Yeshua, the friend of sinners!"

Lk 5:30 The scribes and Pharisees complained to the disciples, "Why do you eat with publicans and sinners?"

Lk 15:1-2 All of the publicans and sinners in the crowd came closer to Yeshua in order to hear him better. The Pharisees and scribes murmured, 'This man accepts publicans and sinners and eats with them.'

Lk 19:7 And when the Pharisees and scribes saw it, they complained, saying 'Why, he has gone to be the guest of a sinner!' As if this was the worst scandal any self-righteous, "honorable" Jew could do.

Do you believe that Yeshua was friends with the false teachers? Was Yeshua a friend of the High Priest, Herod or Pilat? Were Yeshua friends with those he said were children of the devil? (John 8:44) Those he called a "Generation of Vipers?" (Mat 12:34) With those he said "woe" to and called them hypocrites, fools, snakes, and blind? (Mat 23:13-33)? Were Yeshua friends with those who beat him? With those who arrested him and beat all the way back to the High Priest's house?

Actually, Yeshua made it very simple to understand who was a friend of his,

John 15:14 You are my friends if you do whatsoever I command you. Mat 12:50, Jn 2:5, 13:17, 14:21, 1John 5:3

the "friend of sinners" line is both an insult to Jesus and to the people he was with. It's a way of labeling a lower cast system as not worthy and at the same time including Jesus with them while implicitly saying a higher or more "honorable" cast system is more worthy. Jesus came as a great leveler to these systems seeing through the labels and going straight to the heart. In all levels, Jesus saw and responded to both good and bad seed, when he reached out to those lower cast systems he was labeled with them. Today we can respond in similar ways reaching out to the outcasts of all levels of society including the walls the Church itself has made. Not in a way that would engage in its immorality but still in a way that may engage in friendship. The word "friend" can take on very nuanced meanings and I don't think it's helpful to view the word in a way that enables immorality but rather to reinforce the aspects of friendship we should be showing the lost so that we may show them Christ which is the noblest of goals. Paul tells us "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some". this certainly includes friendship but the important aspect is the goal is "so that they may be saved"

"Friend of sinners" is what they called him because he associated with sinners in order to give them the gospel.

I have thoughts like this when I see Jesus portrayed in movies and TV series. Jesus, during his earthly ministry, was, for a better phrase, single minded. There was a goal in and for His life and he was goal oriented. Nothing would deter Him from that goal. He openly rebuked people, even good people, who sought to sway Him. He did not put up with a lot of foolishness.
I think your post makes some good points. He was a man of sorrow. He was rejected, to some extent, by His own family. He was not a pretty boy celebrity. I do not see Him as a joker, a small talker, or a "gad-about." If we behaved as He did I suspect we would be relegated as fanatics and considered a joke in life. But He loved. Didn't He love.
As of late, by that I mean in the last few years, I have sought to discover and know the personality of our Lord. I want to know His likes and dislikes in His life. He showed some signs of this in His interpersonal relationships with His disciples, His earthly parents, and many of the individuals He encountered. But in the end, none of these things were more important than the end-game. The rejection, the trial, the passion, the crucifixion, the burial, and the resurrection. As I said. He was single minded about this, and that single mindedness, in my opinion, framed His earthly life.
Thank you for sharing.
Peace

There is a "friend" aspect to our relationship with Him. In prayer I often call Him "my friend in heaven" and the Holy Spirit "my friend on earth." True friends are hard to come by, and He certainly qualifies.

John 15:12 KJV. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
John 15:13 KJV. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:14 KJV. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
John 15:15 KJV. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
John 15:16 KJV. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
John 15:17 KJV. These things I command you, that ye love one another.

He was on a deadly (pun intended) mission (Mt 20:28).
No feelings of love, joy, laughter just a determination.

I wonder why little children wanted to go near such a unfriendly man on a mission.

Is your MD doctor your "friend" when he has bad news to tell you?

He was every bit a man like us and tested yet without sin. Do you have feelings? Have you no imagination? Why are you so bitter? The little children loved him he healed them and made them feel good. He understood them. He had the company of women too. We’re any of them complaining? He loved everybody. Are you such a literalist that because it doesn’t say laughter he didn’t laugh? He was exactly like us. He was on a mission one time when he left Samaria to go to Jerusalem and he set his face. One time. He gave such joy how could he not have it. Remember raising Lazarus? I bet you cried for joy. Did anybody laugh in the NT. He partied, did he have a stone face? Do young kids never laugh.

No feelings of love, joy, laughter just a determination.
Misrepresentation. . .
I wonder why little children wanted to go near such a unfriendly man on a mission.
Who said no feelings of love, joy, friendliness, warmth. . .none of which imply jocular laughter?

That's morbid to say Jesus never laughed.

It wasn't a deadly mission but a rescue mission.

Well I can see how a person living with a death sentence over their head may not be jovial all the time. A death sentence since birth. Not a nice quick death by lethal injection. A terrible death with hours of agony. Add to that the undercurrent of hate and rejection that followed Him for years, cumulating in almost complete rejection and hate. What a strong person He was. In the garden He asked to be released from this fate. But there was no other way to accomplish the goal. What a weight. What a terrible burden on His shoulders. Yes... I can see that there may not have been a lot of soulical happiness there. As everyone is pointing out, there was this human aspect in His nature. I think that same human aspect would be virtually crushed by this burden. A few verses from Isa 53 bring this out.

Isaiah 53:2-12 KJV
2. For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
8. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
11. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
12. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Especially the references to His soul, which would be the seat of any such happiness.
when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin...
He shall see of the travail of his soul...
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief:

The ISV says crush him...
10 Yet the LORD was willing to crush him, and he made him suffer. Although you make his soul an offering for sin...

Heavy stuff. I ponder how a human soul would act under such a weight.

You stating the last final hours, when He lived among the people for many years. And that has nothing to do with rather Jesus laughed in his life.

I think much of Is 53 was about His life in general. It did not all come down on the last week.
I am not saying He never experienced joy from His heart of which the mind is a part. There was joy just as there was compassion, empathy, and grief. But I think that tremendous burden was always ruling His heart. But I understand your position, and thank you for offering it.
