  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

At what time was Yahshua the Lamb of Yahveh sacrificed?

All times are estimated. If you see a mistake in my estimation, point it out in the Spirit and love Yahshua.

In Exodus chapter 12 Yahveh gives the time frame when the lambs were to be slaughtered:

Exodus 12:1: And YaHVeH spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,

1. This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

2. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:

3. And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

4. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

5. And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

From Easton’s Bible Dictionary:

Topics: E'vening

Text: the period following sunset with which the Jewish day began (Gen. 1:5; Mark 13:35). The Hebrews reckoned two evenings of each day, as appears from Ex. 16:12: 30:8; 12:6 (marg.); Lev. 23:5 (marg. R.V., "between the two evenings"). The "first evening" was that period when the sun was verging towards setting, and the "second evening" the moment of actual sunset. The word "evenings" in Jer. 5:6 should be "deserts" (marg. R.V.).

From Jameson/Fausset/Brown Commentary Volume I page 310: Jameson Fausset Brown Vol. I Commentary pg. 310 01 01,

As we can see from this commentary that the time frame that Yahshua was hung on the tree was between one and six o’clock pm. He had to be down before the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread began because it was an annual Sabbath that began at sunset of the 14th of Abib. At sunset the next day begins, which would be the 15th. There had to be time to take Him down off the stake and prepare His body and lay Him in the tomb before the annual Sabbath began.

Matthew: 26:17: Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Yahshua, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the Passover?

M't: 26:18: And He said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at thy house with My disciples.

M't: 26:19: And the disciples did as Yahshua had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover.

From Matthew we can see that the Jews had established a tradition of eating a meal when the 14th of Abib began at sunset of the 13th. This had to be a tradition that came about later because if you read Exodus 12 it was not originally part of the Passover ceremony. So the meal that Yahshua ate with the disciples was not the same that took place at the time of the Exodus. The Lamb with bitter herbs and unleavened bread was eaten in hast during the 15th of Abib, which would have begun at sunset of the 14th.

Exodus 12:6: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Exodus 12:7: And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

8. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

If we continue with information from the above commentary sunset in the season of the Passover was around 6:45 to 7:00 PM standard time, so the meal that Yeshua ate with the disciples started around 6: 45 or 7PM at the beginning of the 14th, when the sunset at the end of the 13th of Abib. Because it was a high day, there was two sabbath to occur, the passover on the sabbath. (john 19:31)

Let’s trace the steps of Yeshua during His final hours in the flesh before He was to be sacrificed as the Lamb that takes way the sins of the World (John 1:29).

Nisan (Abib) 13th sunsets, which begins the 14th day:

Yeshua and the disciples begin to eat this traditional Jewish meal (Matthew 26:20). During the time of the meal Yeshua announces that one of the disciples will betray Him (Matthew 26:21). Judas is the man (Matthew 26:25). During the meal Yeshua establishes the new symbols of Passover. He commands the bread to symbolize His body (Matthew 26:22). He commands the wine to symbolize His blood of the New Covenant (Matthew 26:27 – 29).

(John 13:2). Yeshua washes the disciples feet (John 13:4 – 12). It is not clear but a little confusing to me at what stage Judas Iscariot was given the sop so that Satan would enter him (John 13:26-27). It had to be after the meal was over and Yeshua had already washed Judas’ feet. During this time two swords are found and taken (Luke 22:38). They sang songs of the feast of the unleven bread and left the upper room (Matthew 26:30). Judas is not with them he goes to the priest to betray Yeshua (John 13:30-31). Yeshua conversation and prayer in John chapters 13 – 17 must have taken place during this time.

Yeshua and the disciples go to the Mount of Olive (Matthew 26:30; John 18). Yeshua tells the disciples they will be scattered and that Peter will deny Him three times (Matthew 26: 31 – 34) before the cockcrows. Now I have heard that this cockcrowing was a slang term. It was a phrase the Jews at that time used for the Roman soldieries that were on watch and would yell out at what hour of the watch they were in. In my Strong’s Concordance in the back, it speaks about the Jewish calendar. It says the first watch took place between sunset and 9PM. During this time Yeshua is praying in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36). Yeshua ask the disciples to watch with Him (Matthew 26:38 – 46).

Judas brings a band of men and officers from the chief priest and Pharisees (Matthew 26:47 – 50; John 18: 3) and betrays Yeshua with a kiss. Peter cuts off the servant of the high priest right ear with his sword (Matthew 26:51; John 18:10).

Yeshua appears before Annas first than Caiaphas the high priest. Peter and John followed Yeshua to the high priest palace (Matthew 26:57; John 18:12 –13). John goes into the high priest palace with Yeshua but Peter stays outside with the servants (Matthew 26:58; John 18:15-16). The chief priest, elders and the council sought to find false witnesses against Yeshua (Matthew 26:59 – 62). While this is going on Peter is outside and denies Yeshua the first time (Mat. 26:69-70; John 18:17). Peter continues to stand with the servants and officers around a fire to warm his body (Mat. 26:71-72; John 18:18). Yeshua continues to be question by the high priest (Matthew 26:63-64). Peter denies Yeshua the second time (John 18:25).

At midnight Peter denies Yeshua the third time (Mat. 26:73-75; John 18:27). The third watch took place beginning at midnight according to Strong’s Concordance and lasted until 3 AM. During this time Yeshua is being abused (Matthew 26:67-68; John 18:22).

The Fourth Watch begins at three o’clock and ends at sunrise around six in the morning. The chief priest, elders and the council hold Yeshua from 12 AM to 6 AM (Matthew 27:1).

The First watch begins and ends at 9 AM. Yeshua is delivered to Pilate (Matthew 27:2; John 18:28). Judas Iscariot realizes what he has done (Matthew 27:3 – 6). Pilate sends Yeshua to Herod. Herod and his men mock Yeshua and abuse Him (Luke 23:6 – 12).

The second watch begins and ends at Noon. Yeshua is delivered back to Pilate (Luke 23:12 – 17). The Jews continue to condemn Yeshua and ask that Barabbas be released to them (John 18:39-40). Pilate washes his hands of this matter and the Jews accept Yeshua blood on their heads and their children’s (Matthew 27:20 – 25). Pilate releases Yeshua to be scourged and crucified (Mark 15:15). Romans soldiers lead Yeshua away to Praetorium Hall where they torture Him (Matthew 27:26 – 31; Mark 15:16 – 20; John 19:1 – 5). Pilate continues to tell the Jewish religious leaders for the third time he can find no fault in Yeshua (Exodus 12:5; Luke 23:18 – 22).

The third watch lasted from Noon to 3 PM. This would be the sixth hour (John 19:14). Yeshua is taken outside by the Roman soldiers so He can be crucified (Mark 15:20). The soldiers compel Simon a Cyrenian to carry Yeshua’s stake (Mark 15:21). Many women are following Yeshua crying for Him. Yeshua tells them don’t cry for Him but for their selves (Luke 23:28 – 31). Yeshua is taken to the place called Golgotha, which is to say the place of the skull (Matthew 27:33). Darkness was over the whole land during this time (Matthew 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44).

At around noon, Yeshua is laid on His stake and the Roman soldiers offered Him vinegar mingled with gall to drink before they nail Him to the stake (Matthew 27:34; Mark 15:23). I have heard some say that this mixture of vinegar and gall was some type of painkiller. The soldier’s begin to nail Yeshua to the stake (Matthew 27:35). He is placed between two criminals (Isaiah 53:12; Luke 23:32; John 19:18; Psalms 22:16). Pilate writes Yeshua’s title and places it on the stake (John 19:19 – 20). The chief priest complains of the title that Pilate writes (John 19:21). At this time the Jews would begin to slaughter the lambs (Exodus 12: 6; John 1:29; I Corinthians 5:7).

Yeshua is placed up right hanging on the tree (Numbers 21:9; John 3:14; Deuteronomy 21:22-23; Mark 15:25). The soldiers case lots for His clothes (Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34; John 19:23-24; Psalms 22:18). The people begin to revile and mock Him (Matthew 27:39 – 44; Mark 15:29 – 32); Luke 23:35 –37). Yeshua’s mother Mary and her sister and Mary Magdalene stands at Yeshua’s stake (John 19:25). Yeshua gives his mother into John’s hands to take care of her (John 19:26-27).

Fourth watch begins from what I understand to be around 3:00 pm. This would be the ninth hour. Yeshua cries out with a loud voice to Yahveh (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34). Those standing around who heard Him thought He was crying out to EliYah (Matthew 27:47; Mark 15:35). Someone gives Yeshua some vinegar to drink (Matthew 27:48-49; Mark 15:36; John 19:28-29). Yeshua commends His Spirit into Yeveh’s hands and dies (Matthew 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46; John 19:30).

The Jews request from Pilate that the bodies be removed before the annual Sabbath of the Feast of Unleavened Bread begins (John 19:31). Soldiers come to the bodies that have been hung on the stakes and break their legs (John 19:32) because they were still alive. They come to Yeshua and see that He is dead already they don’t brake His legs (John 19:33; Exodus 12:5; Psalms 34:20), one of the Roman soldiers pierce Yeshua’s side with his spear (John 19:34; Revelation 1:7; Psalms 22:18).

Thats a lot of stuf you wrote there. I hope it is ok to giv a brief answer.

Between the evenings (Plural) is when the passover lamb was killed. This is a Jewish term. There are two evenings in the Jewish day, The first is the begining of the suns waning, which is Noon. The second is the begining of the dakness as the new day begins, avg. 6 PM. (Don't think this strange, for in most of the western world the day begins at midnight, in the middle of the darkness, and that is strange) Between the evenings as given in Exodus means 3 PM.

Now look at the time of Yeshua. Roman time was calulated om 6Am as the fist hour of the day, as day breaks. Yeshua died at the ninth hour, which is 3 PM.

Yeshua dies at the same moment that the lamb in the temple was killed.
