I plan on becomming a full time minister in the near future, and one of the terms that will be associated with my name is "Reverend"... Now I am not to comfortable with that title - i think it gives to much reverance to me. Dictionary.com defines it as:

rev·er·end
( P ) Pronunciation Key (r
v
r-
nd)
adj.
 1. Deserving reverence.
 2. Relating to or characteristic of the clergy; clerical.
 3. Reverend Abbr. Rev. Used as a title and form of address for certain clerics in many Christian churches. In formal usage, preceded by the: the Reverend Jane Doe; Reverend John Jones.
If the first definition is primary then a secular person seeing me as Rev. Mark Fesco, wont that strike him as a bit egocentric? Where did this term come from, and is it biblical?

IMHO - I hate the title and refuse to use it.

Psalm 111:9
He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

Some things are reserved for the Lord.

OOOOO,....Thank you for that psalm.... I think i'll reject it as well.

I don't like the title myself. I think it bestows on us a title that takes away from our goal of "servant leadership". I can understand somewhat why the title is conferred but I don't think I'll use it when I get ordained either. I mean, you'll have the title whether you like it or not, like a guy with a PhD. is "doctor" no matter if his PhD is in literature or medecine, you get the title. You don't have to use it or introduce yourself by it though.

I've always been partial to "The Right Reverend"... that's the one I'm gonna use.. just so all you low-lifes know where you stand on the food-chain!

Ack!

That was of course a bad joke!

Awesome you want to be in the ministry.
You need to start preparing asap with personal Bible study and loads of prayer.

As for the Reverend part...most Baptist pastors don't use that term. Pastor is the main term used in my area. My pastor has a doctorate degree he has sometimes been address with the title Dr. He calls himself an "old country boy" and just calling him Pastor or Bro. Doug is fine with him. Some smaller groups use preacher.

Reverend is my "official" title when being introduced during formal occasions like weddings, funerals, etc.. To everyone else, I am just pastor or brother Richard. If asked for an obituary, I will usually request that they say "Pastor Richard DeFord officiating" rather than Reverend Richard DeFord. I do plan on having a Rev. put before my name in the phone book this next go around, though.
