I thought everyone here is supposed to respect one another. However.. there seems to be a few here that do not repect the CF forum in General..and call "Christians"... Xtains. Now to me..if I were a Christian..this would offend me.
That "Label" represents a persons belief in society.
IF...You mock a persons belief..they get offended and put the walls up. There is no place for learning.
What if you notcied some Christians calling Messianics... Messies all the time... or Xianics. Would you even care.. maybe some of you wouldn't. BUT...Since this is A "CHRISTIAN" Forum...have a little respect.

I used to use Xtian because I learned we were not to
use the word spelled out. After discussing it with a
rabbi (who of course have different opinions) he said
it was not a problem.
So it's use is not to cause offense, but because of
people trying to follow halachah...

Ahavah,

It entirely depends on the attitude of the person doing the posting. The truth is that the Greek letter Chi (X) is the first letter of Christ, and is technically correct. There are plenty of Christians who use "X-tian" simply because its shorter. I personally don't. I know that it offends some, and prefer not to take that chance. But I don't take it personally if people use the abbreviation. Its sort of like the RCC abbreviation. Technically, the name is Catholic Church -- Roman Catholic is SLANG, and was once used as a derogatory way to refer to the Catholic Church. But its lost its sting, and many Catholics even use the term Roman Catholic now, esp if they are latin rite. So basically, I take it all with a grain of salt. However, if a particular individual is nasty, using Roman Catholic to dig it in, or X-tian to be rude (and you can usually tell), that is a different ballgame.

It doesn't bother me either way, same with the spelling of "Xmas".

X in Greek is Chi, and does stand in shorthand for Christ.

I think it is in general, people who do not know the history, nor halacha getting their panties in a bunch over nothing. (and I thought that before I was even Messianic)

I would think that if a certain spelling, regardless of it being justified or not, offends people, why insist? Just to show your dislike for the group?

This is the kind of attitude that makes me SICK. Are we, as in "the human race", not mature enough that we can respect and love everyone despite their religion? Do we have to find offensive ways to refer to other people? Or do we have to call them by a different name so that we can feel special?

Even if this were halakhah, personally I would never follow the opinion of the men who dictate the rules of a religion over the feelings of my neighbor. Isn't this what the Torah says? Isn't this what Jesus preached as well? Oy oy oy...

To quote your own Messiah, what did Jesus say about this? If your brother asks for your coat... I guess this suits the situation very well. If someone takes offense at it, why not refrain from doing it? Or is the abbreviation more important to us than the feelings of others?

Fremen

True Fremen, but there is a difference in offending someone, and someone "taking offence".

This would be something that would be akin to the stumbling block.

Sometimes there is nothing to stumble over, yet someone still will stumble.

Same as "taking offence". No harm is meant in a simple "hello", but sometimes people are offended, because you weren't dressed appropriately or the inflection was on the wrong part of the word (hence "getting panties in a bunch")... or simply misunderstanding "hello" to mean something else.

Sometimes there is a stumblingblock and we put it there.

Sometimes there is a stumblingblock and we didn't warn someone it was there...

All situations and perameters should be taken into account.

Typically I don't say it, but I do use Xmas. I do not celebrate it, and I do not use the other word typically anyway. Someone could get offended if I type Xmas, but the truth to be told (and in dictionaries and encyclopedias), it means the same as Christmas.

Some people get offended when I say I don't celebrate it (regardless what I do)... some are offended I celebrate Hanukkah..

you can never please everyone, but you should live your life in such a way that you try not to drag someone down.

that's all I meant.

I guess the part that confuses me about taking the "x" as an offense is this:

If someone infers the "x" as a cross; then do they get offended when Christians were a cross around their neck?

Referring to the "x" as a cross is the only way I see it as being offensive. But then again, I may be quite mistaken.

I only use X to represent Christ when in the company of those that I know understand its significance and won't be offended.

Christian is normally what I call followers of Christ.

I think like mentioned before. We should seek not to be offensive.
