  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Im about to go away to school and they have a dsl connection in all the rooms I will be buying a new desktop probally january or so and my question is which is better XP Pro or XP home for my situation. The computer will be used for papers internet research and games as well as some digital photo editing I think that covers all the questions you would need to know. Thanks

The only advantage Pro has over Home is that Pro can run two processors at the same time. Unless you buy a system that has 2 CPU's than it's a waste of extra money unless you are into the bragging rights thing. Do a search on the net and you will find this is very true. If you can afford a 2 processor system than go for it! I happen to like systems with 2 cpu's. I doubt you need one for what you are doing though. I'm only basing this on research and class instruction of course.

I have XP Pro and know a few people that have Home. Pro's good for networks and things like that and seems to be more stable along with having many other capabilites that Home doesn't have. As for you, I think that Home would be fine. However, Pro might be a good idea for digital фото editing.

I'm a computer professional and I upgraded to Pro primarily for IIS (Internet Information Server), so that I wouldn't need to rely on the recovery CD from the computer manufacturer for my OS (I hate that) and so that a few features that are turned-off on Home would be activated. However, for what you describe your uses to be (and for an awful lot of other people) I think there are a lot of places you could put that money to better use. Caveat: I don't play computer games so I wouldn't know if there's any advantage there.

Here is the rundown:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/choosing2.asp
Basicly, unless you are setting up a web server much of the extra stuff is useless. And if you did set it up as a server you are limited to 10 remote connections with XP Pro and 5 with XP Home. If you are going to set up a server it would be far better to get a full server operating system. And really, many of the web features not included with Home, you can download something just like it for free off the net for XP.

Much of your information is useless.

You are far better off with Pro, if you're looking at a Dell the difference in price isn't much. On most OEM PC's it is a slight difference, usually 125 dollars difference. It was I was looking into a Dell notebook, and it was a 115 dollar difference when I decided to buy my HP notebook.

Home vs Pro, Pro is a lot more secured than XP Home edition. Pro isn't just from running a web server which some people here are suggesting is the only difference.

Hate to tell them but

WRONG

There are a few more differences in the two. I'd recommend you go with Pro.

However, home would be just fine for your needs.

What are you talking about? EFS? That's nothing new. I used to run encription on my Win 95 system years back. Anything that Pro has that Home does not have (if you ever notice) you can download something similar off the net. If you are really after high securety anyway, don't get a Microsoft system in the first place.

Oh dear, here we go, now your gonna tell me **** about Linux.

Look bud, when you get all your MCSE, Cisco, Network etc Certs, come tell me about your opinions.

Otherwise, Pro would still be my recommendation, however Home will be more than suficiant for your needs as I orginally stated.

Pro is better than Home. Period.

You can't actually.

And I noticed a lot of different things when I upgraded to pro instead of home :)

Dude, this is rather rude of you. On top of it you presume that I have no training and tell me to shut up. So far you have not put up any proof to be so rude. As for... Linux, I'll be happy to recomend OS X (Mac) over any NTFS system.

This thread had degraded and I'm outa here.

There is no difference in stability between Home and Pro. They are exactly the same kernel. There are key differences, though. The difference is 5 fold.

1)networking capabilities. Ability to belong to a domain and be centrally managed. The Home is limited to 5 connections, and the Pro is unlimited, IIRC.
2)Security. Domain authentication, Encrypting File System and Auditing Tools
3)Corporate Management. Group policy support, IntelliMirrormanagement technologies‚ software management technology, improved scripting support and management interfaces
4)Mobile Computing. Offline Folders and Encryption File System
5)Advanced Features. Backup utility, two-processor support, Remote Desktop

For a dorm room, you will notice no difference between Home and Pro. You might as well buy the Home edition. Anything else that is reported is merely a Grand Illusion.

Enough argueing.....just get the pro, you may find someday down the road that you needed to have XP Pro and then you'll just have to pay more to upgrade later.....
By then the next version of Windows, whose development is already well under way, will be released, so that isn't necessarily the best advice to give.

Pro, for the simple reason that there's probably a reason that it costs more to begin with. And you may just like that reason.

Look, all I’m saying is that you can get most of the stuff on that list as a third party application download. It’s the same thing they did when they released Millennium and tried to pass it off as some advanced OS over 98SE when it was just the same thing with a few extra apps you could download from other sources.

For some, XP pro is a God send and that’s fine and dandy. If I were building a system with 2 CPU’s I’d definitely get Pro. I just think it’s funny to see people get so bent out of shape if you even hint that their operating system is not omnipotent.

I got XP on my laptop for the exact same reason the poster is getting it for. I take it to class with me and I also use it when I teach. I have no serious complaints about it. I have no need for Pro in my situation what so ever. And yes I use quite a few deferent operating systems. I bet I’ve used and trouble shot some systems that none of you ever heard or saw before (or even born yet for some when I started). I don’t think it’s any big deal though, it’s just a bunch of code wound up in circuitry that my keyboard, screwdriver and soldering iron can make quick work of.
