Competition brings out the best in manufacturers.

Well, except for Micro$oft. lol If they do come out with a handheld, they will probably buy up some chip patents that Sony and Nintendo use for competitive leverage, then steal the design for the new tablet gaming computer that Apple or some other company is working on. :D:D:D

I am glad Sony has the PSP. Better then all the Gameboys. Its what I have always wanted in handheld gaming.

Microsoft will not be making a handheld at this time to directly compete with the DS and PSP though. They said they might make one at a later time though.

Seriously, if MS does make one, I believe it will be a good one. When they made the Xbox, they knew they weren't dealing with an operating system that could be released as a beta, then patched to fix; they would have to get it right the first time around. I believe they will do the same with a handheld if they decide to make one.

Now that I have a chance to answer this... Truth is... I hate MS. I think their entering the console market is possibly the worst thing that could have happened to the gaming world. They really have no business sense at all. What their strategy? Buy everyone elses ideas and slap a Microsoft logo on it. I think their console is totally lame and a waste of parts. I'd rather use it as a coaster, or maybe a doorstop. The harddrive is totally unneccesary, and live is stupid 'cause you can only use broadband with it... Plus you have to pay just for the SERVICE, and if the game has a fee, you have to pay for that too. C'mon, guys, just one or the other, OK? In short, I hate Microsoft.

So, with all that I mind, you might understand why I hope beyond all hope that they don't ruin the handheld market by entering it.

Microsoft should back out, so should PSP. They will be crused by Nintendo. Before them, 16 other companies have tried to go up against Nintendo in the handheld market, and 16 have fallen to them.

Some say PSP will come out on top because of its power. Errr...NO! May I reference the Neo-Geo? Neo-Geo was more powerful than any other system in its time, yet it cost much much MUCH more than any other system.

PSP will cost $250 and DS costs $150. PSP discs will be smaller and easier to lose, as well as scratch. DS games will be in that nice hard case. :) Also, well, Nintendo strives in platformers, and that is what handhelds are made for. PSP is run by a company with a crutch on RPGs and sequels (which is also why PS2 is falling, but that's another story).

Well....ya know the harddrive is what helps the PS2 run games like FFXI? :) Also, it saves money on a memory card. :p

Live starts up with usually a 2-12 month free subscription, then like 6 bucks a month after that. You don't pay money to play the game online. That's completely inaccurate. Only case like that is Phantasy Star Online.

Yeah, like $15 or $20 is gonna break the bank... (Also, MMOs on a console is another issue that I have, but we won't go there now)

Well, when Live first launched, that sure wasn't the case. But as I said, I could care less about XBox or Microsoft.

It drives me crazy that an X-Box uses no memory cards, just the hard drive. I heard once that you can buy memory cards... but since I don't have an X-Box, I haven't been seeking out a memory card for one, so I'm not sure on that.

well technically they didnt get it right first up... it was hacked withing 3 days of it being released... the Dashboard (or operating system whatever you want to call it) has alot security flaws (and the console itself has some hardware flaws). the xbox is so easy to hack its not funny (having a HDD makes it a whole lot easier too). im not saying its a bad console, but micro$oft certainly didnt get it right first up...

but i think you could be right with the handheld (if they make it) because they have alot to learn from the xbox (ie security flaws etc) but i dont think they will make one... if they do it will probably be HUGE! lol

Graphic Phantasy Star Online or PSO
Here's what I think about the PSP and the DS...

  • The DS will cost a lot less than the PSP and Nintendo is willing to experiment with all sorts of weird attachments and add-ons.
  • The DS is much more innovative, with Dual Screens and touch sensitivity and built-in WiFi.
  • The DS, unlike the PSP has a Mic port which will make it somewhat like Xbox Live Voice Recognition.
  • DS will also have 2 game slots (one for DS games and one for GBA). With the 2 slots, you will be able to buy upgrades for your DS games.
  • The only thing good about PSP is the large screen... too bad it will be easily scratched with no flip-top like the DS and GBA-SP.
  • The size and shape of the PSP makes it impractical, you will need to carry it with an additional protector or fanny pack to avoid scratches, it is too big to fit in a pocket.
  • The DS has a more compact form and with the flip top screen it will fit easily into a pocket, no worries about scratching up the 2 screens. For portable systems, cartridges are much more durable and easily maintained.
  • The movie discs on PSP are just about useless. It will be too expensive and cumbersome to buy a movie in multiple formats (DVD for home and PSP discs for the road). Even so, GBA already is getting movies in cartridge format.
  • DS will likely have something similar. Ditto for MP3 playback.
Overall, I see no advantages for the PSP over the DS. The graphics will be N64/PS level (not that there’s much of a difference between them), but as we all know it's all about the games.
  • When it comes to games, the games on the DS look like GameCube games and PSP looks like it has PS2 like games. So, if you like PS2 and Gamecube go with the DS. When it comes to how good the systems are... overall DS is better then PSP easily.
  • The Xbox has 50,000MB...or was it 5000MB? I think the MMORPGs will come out on the DS and maybe the PSP you see the games on the PS2. The MMORPG ones have too good a graphics. As for the Gamecube it has it's Phantasy Star Online aka PSO. It's not all that good a graphics. So, I think DS will have PSO on it and as for the "Xbox handheld" if and when it comes out -- it may have a PSO as well. If it's true that Microsoft will come out with a handhald, it will have Online. If a Xbox handheld comes out, I want it if for the Halo games. I sure hope it will come out.:crossrc:
  • Yes, Xbox has memory cards also but, unlike Sony it's not making gamers buy them.
