Would youi kill to spare the life of someone you love ?.  If the oportunity presented itself to enable you to  prevent the life of your loved one being taken, but by default required that you take the life of the perpetrator, would you/could you, do it?

As a Christian I view the Commandments of God as Law, but I am certain that I would not stand by and watch my child being murdered, if I could do something to prevent it.  I know that this is a hypothetical question, but I would be interested to hear in what way other Christians imagine themselves responding in such a situation.

As a genuinely peaceful, law abiding citizen, God loving and fearing, I have a hard time imagining myself living up to the commandment "Thou shalt not kill", when I think of the love that I have for my family and the protective instinct that is present in all of us who are nurturers of family life.

ukok.

Yes without hesitation.  I would ask God to fill me and then I would react. I have been in situations that required me to react in such a way but not to the extreme of murder.

We serve a righteous God whom calls us to administer His justice.  To simply standby and allow such a sin is one of the most Hypocrytical acts that a christian can do.  We are to be His hand in bringing about His will on this Earth as it is in Heaven.

Thank you for asking such an intelligent question.  Thank You Lord for this post.

Yes. Question, if I remember correctly (and I am no Greek Scholar)...in the greek...isn't it "Thou shalt not "murder"??
As in kill without a cause, kill for one's entertainment...kill for resementment...or kill because of dislike...or basically any injust reason?

And yes...we are responsible for exposing evil and warring (sp) against it.  If one were to ask me presently if I am capable of killing I would say no.  But then soon after I have given that answer...I would question it.  First off, for something of the nature of a situation such as the one presented here...and for the fact that I am human, and human instinct is an entirely different topic (but still relevant).  So...am I capable? Yes.  Would I? If need be...Yes.

Incredible that you point out the difference in "killing" and "murder".  Goes back to the spirit of the law it's intent and real meaning.  This is where the "Truth" needs to be known about what is written.

If we become angry with someone in our heart have we "killed" them or "murdered" them.  Depends on why we are angry with them.

I Timothy 5:8: "You should make it clear that for a man to refuse to look after his own relations, especially those actually living in his house, is a denial of the faith he professes. He is far worse than a man who makes no profession." JBP

1 Timothy 5:8: "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."

"Providing for" is clearly not limited to food and shelter, but protection as well. Would I kill to protect the ones I love? Pity the one who tests me!

Excellent Scripture quotes.

You kind of sound like Mr. T. "I Pity the Fool..."

It would be quite difficult to stand by and just watch someone attacking someone you loved and not try and do something about it. Especially a child no matter who it belonged to.

I've only been in this situation once that I can remember, where a guy three times my size was on top of a friend and had a machete in his hand, I had no choice but to try and pull him off my friend. (with prayer of course who wouldn't be praying in that situation) lucky for me (and an answer to prayer) he actually just kind of pretty much gave up the fight willingly once I approached him and started to pull him off.

At any rate I found it impossible to stand by and watch knowing someones life might be at risk. And just as an added note, I didn't need to kill in order to take care of the situation.

In theory...and I pray that I would follow this....I would protect them by my own life...if that is not possible, then I do believe that I would be compelled to protect them by any means necessary.

Hypothetically...what if he hadn't stopped? Naturally I am assuming this guy had evil intentions...especially with a machete in his hand!
What Boldness. Praise God!

Now THAT was a step of faith.

If he hadn't stopped? I most likely wouldn't be here today to tell about what happened.

Didymus: I would not allow someone to kill a child. But I would have a hard time living with myself if I killed. I am a red belt. I am pretty adapt at rendering another harmless without taking a life.

I am not a pacifist as Susan. Please do not tie us together.

I would want to be able to protect my children and/or my loved ones, but i'm not sure I could actually kill. One thing I have learned is never to say never. I have said I WOULD NEVER, or I WOULD, because a lot of the times I don't act the way I think I would. I know I would want to protect them, and giving up my own life wouldn't be a problem. I was never even in a fight as a child, I usually jsut got beat up!

the one thing for sure is I would call upon the Lord to help me. I would HOPE I had the ability and the presence of mind to protect them.
