  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would you call this demon posession?

I was hanging out with my friends one night and this girl happened to see the cross I always wear and started talking to me about my faith. We hit it off immediately. Our relationship grew very intense very fast, and I soon realised of her "posession", or maybe heavey demonic influences would be the word.

She grew up with a very difficult life, to say the least. She found her dad dead when she was 12. She started taking drugs at 16, started stripping at 18, and was even raped a few times by ex boyfriends. It wasn't until she was 26 when she really changed her life around. One day, her mom told her to go to this Christian fellowship group (the one i currently attend), so she hesitantly went. She was always an avid bible basher...and hated people preaching in front of her. Well she went along to this meeting one night and the group leader asked her if he could pray over her. She reluctantly agreed to it, but found herself overwhelmed with a sense of peace and love as he was praying over her. She opened her heart further during this prayer session and "let God in". From that day forward she was saved and has changed her life around completely. Wonderfull testimony if i ever heard one.

Anyway, not too long after she was saved was when i met her. Things seemed to be going great, and then one night, something happened. She snapped. She started yelling at me, cursing at me, cursing at God. Saying horrible horrible things that i shouldn't even repeat. We slowly talked it out and I just chalked it up to one of her "episodes" (she was bi-polar manic depressive). Well, this wasn't the end of it...and it got much worse. One night, after drinking heavily and taking some pharmicuticals, she took a knife and went down to the public pool naked and threatened to kill anyone that came near her, even little kids. The Landlord said that she even made sexual advances towards the kids, asking them if they "want to F**k" (sorry for the profanity, but i just want you to realise the magnitude of her situation). Well after the cops left, she passed out, the next day came along and she didn't remember a thing of what happened. I mean, nothing at all. And I didn't want to go into any detail with her about what she did so i just left it alone and prayed. All I could do was pray and pray and pray. Well one day she checked herself into the rehab hospital to get detoxed from xanax and everything changed. She has turned full swing to the light of the Lord, glowing with joy. One of the patients in the hospital was even convinced she was an angel sent from heaven (I think he was insane though). But anyway, it seems as though she is not under the influence of any demonic posession now..in fact, she has been so purified that she is radiant with and overflowing amount of joy, love, and happiness...and it's all thanks to God.

I wouldn't attribute it immediately to demonic possession, although demonic activity certainly may be a contributing factor. At least two other factors, I'd say, are a combination of mental illness and perhaps a neurological pathology brought on by substance abuse. It sounds like she needs to get herself both a good doctor and a good spiritual director to work with her on a steady basis.

I would agree with Wolsely. Demonic possession shouldn't be the first conclusion that is jumped to. Although it still is a possibility it should be treated with caution. In the Catholic Church there are strict norms regarding the performance of exorcisms and the permission of the diocesan Bishop is required before any take place.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen

I guess, there's two parts to the question.

One is, "what caused this".

Another is, "what mechanisms are in place".

It may well be the result of demonic activity, or general evil, but still more susceptible to mental health professionals than to exorcism.

Certainly, I'd *start* with the mental health people... but definitely get some spiritual guidance in there too.
