  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

would u tithe 10% in this situation?

I think both my husband and I would feel ledto do so. We both veiw EVERYTHING that we have as God's...and we are to be proper stewards of those things, money definitely included. We'd give at least 10%, yes, possibly more depending on how much it was.

At least 10%. Would not go to local church however, would go to Christian organisations we saw needy, or felt God was calling us to donate to. Or, we might use it ourselves for a Godly purpose, such as purchasing literature to distribute or something like that.

A tithe really isn't the right word for it. There is nowhere in the NT where Christians are told to tithe - rather, all we have is Gods, not only 10%.

A tithe is what the Jews were instructed to offer. It was 10% of their agricultural produce. This was to be taken to the temple, sacrificed to God, and eaten in a big feast. In fact, if it was too far to herd all your cattle to Jerusalem, you could sell them and exchange them for whatever you liked. Most of the food from them was just eaten by the people anyway, so the idea was completely different to that of a monetary offering to support a church.

An offering is a gift to God of money (or time or anything), NOT necessarily 10% of your income. In fact, nowhere in the bible does it instruct you to give 10% of your income to your church, although many churches (especially those with teleevangelist ministers) would like you to believe it does. All we have is God's. Whatever we give back to Him is an offering to Him. Even in the NT, the best example of giving to the church / synagogue was the story of the widows mites - here the widow gave all she had, not just 10%.

Here comes the tithe debate.......

BTW, "tithe" has a double meaning, so it's often confused or misapplied:

1. Tithe = a tenth. So a 10% tithe is redundant. Ergo, you can't tithe 9% or 11%.

2. A Biblical tithe was always produce or livestock; ergo, it was never money or currency.

So....we can give a 10th (a tithe) of our money, but we can't Biblically tithe our money.

I think I will avoid this thread because, as stated, it will be a tithe debate. All I will say is to check out a book called "God's Plan For Prosperity" by Mark Gorman. It's a very good book that discusses the 4 types of giving and explains what each one is in detail and how tithing works within the church and how God commands it. Very good book.

I don't believe that it's Biblical to tithe *exactly* 10% or that you always have to give that much. I say, give what you can. If you can afford to give 10, 20, or 30% -- do so. But if you have bills you need to pay, or a family to feed, I'd say take care of that first. I'd donate the extra money to a Christian organization that I support.
