  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What about AI that observes whether you yawn too much at work, or if your eyes appear tired too often? Would you be okay with that? Because that tech already exists, and is in use.

I like the cameras they work great. I have a 70” tv in my living room and above that I have a 42” mounted to the wall that we use to show family photos slideshow on. I installed an Amazon Fire Stick on the 42” tv and it comes with a photos app that you can upload unlimited photos on it and have it play a slideshow 24/7. Then I connected my Eufy door lock to the Alexa app which allows me to have the camera interrupt the photo slide show when someone comes to the door so I can see who’s at the door. I have a 32” fire tv upstairs in my bedroom that does the same and at night when I activate night mode when we go to sleep if it detects a person it turns on the tv in my bedroom and shows the camera that detected the person. It’s pretty nice to be woken up by the alarm and not have to fumble around with my phone trying to see that tiny screen waking up from a dead sleep when your eyes aren’t quite working yet. It gives me time to get to the gun safe if I need to.

Why would I care?

There's nothing wrong with that. Or with cameras in general, or with protecting your home... In this thread, I'm referring to the use of AI, and where we do, or don't want it to go in the future, as far as 'being controlled'.

Liberty is the state of being free from oppressive restrictions and having the ability to act and speak freely. It means having the freedom to make personal choices about one's life, behavior, and beliefs, as long as they are lawful and not harmful to others.

Because one thing leads to another, and if you don't care now, then whe will you care?

Obviously one thing leads to another, but that still doesn't answer my question... why should I care?

Yeah well that freedom goes both ways. If I hire an employee I should have the right to observe that employee to make sure that he or she is doing what I’m paying him or her to do and doing it according to company policies that I’ve put in place.

Agreed, however with the upcoming technology, it's right and just that we distinguish the boundaries alongside the technological advancements, so as to maintain a healthy society. If you look back into history, at the beginning of the industrial revolution, we see that initially, boundaries were not made, and we see how rivers and streams were flooded with toxic chemicals. We saw lax safety standards, and a lot of other factors that were overlooked.

Today, we have a new situation that deserves evaluation and dialogue amongst people. We should take into account the opinions, hopes and fears of the people today, while simultaneously preparing for what's to come.

The difference between me, and a lot of other people, is that I tend to be a *big picture* type thinker. I'm not looking at myself, or you personally, but at our entire society.. I feel like we need to know what is and isn't okay. Where do we draw the line in the sand? This is the paradigm I'm trying to portray with this thread, while looking at what's to come.

...We need to know where we stand before someone else makes that decision for us, at which point, it will be too late to go back.

I can appreciate your viewpoint, and your fervency. But you're asking me to worry about a 'monster' in the shadows that I'm not sure is there. At the moment all you're asking me is, do I care about being watched at certain times and in certain places, and the answer is no. In fact I actually think that it could be a good thing.

I realize that we need people who'll point out the 'monsters', but I also realize that the monsters aren't always there, and we often do ourselves more harm worrying about them, than they were ever going to do on their own.

So am I concerned about AI becoming 'Big Brother'... not really. In fact, given the state of the world today, I'm not convinced that people's obsession with unrestrained liberty isn't actually part of the problem.
