• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I figured I'd get good advice here vs. in Christian Advice...

God's called me to befriend, guide, and mentor a kid with Autism (he's in 7th grade). From what I can tell, he looks up to me (though has an odd way of showing it of course), and is ready for what God has in mind for his life, whatever that is.
A bit of background, I've been diagnosed in the past with Asperger's, OCD, and ADHD, though I'm fairly certain that I never really had OCD and seem to have grown out of the other two. But I have no idea on how to go about working with this kid. I have an idea that God will guide me in every interaction I have so that he gets what he needs, however, if anyone on these threads has any tips or advice on this that would be awesome.

I work with kids often, so I know the usual boundaries. But this is an unusual situation.

Nevermind. The topic is now irrelevent, seeing as I've already gotten advice- and the family has seen fit to not come to the church anymore, and hasn't responded to my email for whatever reason...
it can sometimes be very challenging going to church( for folk with A.S.) I have A.S and find it difficult sensory wise- with the noise after church, for example.

I'm wary of anyone working with autistic kids that has any type of disorder themselves sorry to say.
Wouldn't that make them, well, MORE desirable to work with if it's something you experienced?

BTW, it looks like I WILL be working with said boy, who is 13. I'll mainly be mentoring him and working with him on Christianity, and he is higher-functioning autism. He can carry out conversations, though can get over excited. If anyone has suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

Hi, that's fairly sad to hear.

As it's due to us being human beings and the many commonalities we have which help us to help another.

Also, God bless anyone who reaches out no matter what they themselves are dealing with.

Been in recovery forums long enough to know that not many people are free from some sort of situation or another.

Not sure why you might think a doctor, counselor, pastor, or mental health worker or other have themselves no disorders.

That's just not real world.

Patience!!! That is my biggest advice...the more patience and understanding you have with him...the more you will reach him. I have AS and I have worked with children of all ages for over 20 years. I seem to do the best with the kids with ADD (and probably AS but not worked with any with a known Dx of it although there were a few kids that I suspect now that I look back). The reason I think I worked so well with those particular students is that I didn't get on them for being fidgety and always listened to them and I don't know I just talked to them like normal kids, I just didn't let the hyperness or their difficulties get to me...I would just gently redirect them and it just magically seemed to work somehow). I think if you keep your lines of communication with God open the entire time...He will guide you. I hope this helps.
