Wizard Hunt

Here's a story Im writing, Id love to hear what you think

WIZARD HUNT

I can't do it anymore!" Berke pounded the page before him in frusteration. "I hate this stupid book! It doesn't explain it well enough!" He stared down at the small printing, teeth on edge. He was terrible at sums, horrible at geography, he stunk at writing out reports. He just wasn't any good at school. What was the point anyhow? When would he ever need to use all this stuff?

" Berke, sit up straight and continue on."

Berke looked over at his Uncle Drake, he was pulling gently on his long grey beard as usual, and his watery blue eyes were eyeing Berke narrowly.

" Honestly now. You squirm like a child. Your nearly seventeen, boy. You should be able to sit still by now."

"Uncle, I can't do this. It's driving me crazy! Besides, Im going to be a wizard like you! Not a school teacher! I want to learn spells! Not math."

Drake sighed and stood up from his wooden stool, rubbing his back.

"Oh very well, but we've done your wizardry today already. Run outside and stop bothering me, boy."

Berke slammed the book shut and nearly knocked his chair over in his rush to get out of the house. Drake shook his head, rubbing his eyes, "Fool boy" he muttered to himself, "Ah well. He'll be a good wizard." He shuffled over to the window and gazed out at the village surrounding their small house. "Unrest..." he muttered, "Everywhere I look now, unrest. Who knows what may happen...."

Berke ran down the dusty village street, enjoying the wind blowing through his brown curls. "Ho!" he called out to his friend, who was hanging out the window of his cottage, "Come down Bradon!"

"Can't!" Bradon waved at him, "Got studies! How'd you get off easy?"

"You know my'nucle!" Berke laughed, " He's got weak eyes, doesn't like helping me read, so I can usually get out of it if I complain enough!"

"Lucky" his friend moaned, "Ma don't have weak eyes-"

"Bradon Brewsha! You get in 'ere an finish yor studies this minute!" A woman's voice hollered somewhere in the house.

"Better go" Bradon told him mournfully.

Berke waved and continued onto the bakers shop where he bought a pastrie.

"Got out of our studies early did we, young Berke?" the fat cooks wife shook a finger

"Yes'm" Berke winked and darted out the door before she could scold.

Once outside the shop he slowed to a walk, and nibbling his pastrie he headed down the street that led out of the village. He liked to walk in the forest, to clear his head after his studies, wistling to himself or singing whenever he pleased.

Someone was pounding at the door, and Drake hurried as fast as his old legs would take him to lift the hatch and fling open the door.

"Drake!" It was his friend Anna, her green eyes wide with fear, her long grey hair wind blown and tangled, 'Drake! It has happened!"

"Ast! Come inside Anna!"

"No time-"

"People will be suspicius!"

Anna rushed in and closed the door behind her, "The village council cannot keep the people back any longer. The people are planning on it."

"When?"

"Tonight! You must get out!"

"Anna, no one knows what I really am. Or the boy. They won't come after us."

"There may be people who know! You can't just sit back and hope they don't! Who knows who the boy may have told! Or what he has let slip!"

"I have instructed him to let no one know, and not to do any magic with anyone but me. No one could possibly know!"

"Its to risky!" Anna grabbed his shoulders, " Hear me you old codger! It's happening! It's not just wispers anymore! It's not just black looks aimed at possible Wizards! The people are determined to track down and KILL! Drake, it's Wizard hunt! And you better get out NOW!"
