In Beginning God created the heavens and the earth (created through and for Jesus who is the “Beginning”) and mankind can readily see God’s invisible qualities…His eternal power and divine nature…from seeing the literal, visible universe.
Rom 1:20 KJV
(20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
The visible universe should be enough to give mankind the knowledge of the invisible God. There is no excuse.
But no…. mankind did not think to retain that knowledge of God.
Rom 1:21-22 KJV
(21) Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
(22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Man instead became vain in his own thoughts…his estimations…his reasonings….and his foolish heart was darkened when he professed himself as “wise”.
Mankind has then BECAME without the form of God’s righteousness and void of the knowledge of Him and that is where we are now in this period of time.
“Without form” = without God’s righteousness. It became “void”….that is, void of the knowledge of God. "darkness was upon the face of the deep" = mankind's heart had become darkned.
This is the meaning of the metaphor of the creation account. The earth BECAME without form and void.
Gen 1:2
(2) And the earth BECAME without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
This interpretation is supported by Jeremiah where the same statement of the earth being “without form and void” also shows up in Jeremiah 4:23.
His people have not KNOWN Him and have no understanding and have no knowledge to do good. They are void of understanding.
They are without the form of His righteousness. They are wise to do evil rather than good.
Jer 4:22-23 KJV
(22) For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
(23) I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
Without form of righteousness= there is none righteous. No, not one. There is none that does good.
Becoming void of knowledge= there is none that understands. None that truly seek God.
The earth BECAME without the form of righteousness as His people have all together BECAME unprofitable.
Rom 3:9-12 KJV
(9) What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
(10) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
(11) There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
(12) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
They did not like to retain God in their knowledge….and so the whole earth has BECOME without the form of His righteousness and void of His knowledge.

(28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Since seeing is not believing, now man must HEAR His knowledge (the Light) as preached in the voice of Jesus in the Spirit of Truth.
God commanded that His Light to shine out of the darkness of our hearts when we hear the voice of the Son who comes to give us an understanding of Him who is true.
The Light of the knowledge of the glory of God shines in the face of Jesus Christ who speaks to us and gives us that knowledge.
2Co 4:6 KJV
(6) For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The Spirit of God moves upon the face of the waters and speaks to the darkened hearts of mankind and says that “God IS Light” which should be the proper translation of Genesis 1:3.
This is the first lesson given to mankind who has BECOME without form and void and His foolish heart was darkened. That Light of His knowledge shall shine within our darkened hearts (darkness was upon the face of the deep) when we hear the true voice of our Lord.
