• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I went to the Lord some years because I was convinced that I would never win over habitual sin. I would like to share what He told me. He reminded me of the time I lived in Austria when I was ten years old and just learning to ski.

I couldn't ski. I was the worst in my group. At that time Austrian schools got out for a week at a time, the kids got on a train and the whole group went skiing.

The first day we were divided into groups by ability. Of course, I was in the lowest group. And of that group I was the worst. I just couldn't understand the instruction. Then toward the end of that week I got behind my instructor and did everything she did. Look! She put all her weight on her left ski! I did the same as I formed a wedge behind her. And look--I did a beautiful snow plow turn! She turned around just then to tell me something, I think she was about to give up on me. She saw me turn, her mouth dropped into a perfect "O" and she didn't say anything. I could tell she was stunned.

That was the beginning. I lived in Austria for six years, and every year I went skiing for a week or more. But that didn't mean I did well. I fell down more than anybody else. I felt like I was always the one sitting in the snow. But after six years, I was in the expert group, I skied in the races at the end of the week, and I was winning. Today I am an expert skier--and I hardly ever fall.

That is what the Lord reminded me of when I went to Him and asked Him for help. He reminded me of all the times I sat in the snow, and how cold and wet I would get if I just sat there. He reminded me how I learned to get up fast, and to go on, never giving up.

He showed me that learning to overcome sin is like that. We are going to fall, maybe hundreds of times. Maybe even thousands of times. But like a loving parent, God watches us and waits for us to get up. Don't sit in the snow! It's cold and wet! Get up, try again, keep going, and if you fall again just get up again. Ask Him to clean you up. He will, 1 John 1:9.

Eventually I learned to ski; eventually we will learn to live without falling so much. We can do it. God will help us!

God does not condemn us when we sin. He convicts us, but He doesn't condemn us. His heart tells us get up! Let Him brush you off! Keep trying, eventually you will learn!

And if you want to learn how to not sin--how to do it really well--get behind the Instructor, and watch Him. Just watching Him will help you to get those turns right.

Here is something else that has helped me so much: God has given us power over sin!!!

Whenever I am tempted, whenever I need help, I turn to Romans 6. Sometimes I even read it out loud.

Romans 6:1-14 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life...knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, the the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having be raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him...Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And to do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

My brothers and sisters, sin is not supposed to have dominion over us any more! We have been set free from the law of sin and death! We DON'T have to sin anymore. We can live holy, godly lives, "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed," John 8:36.

You are welcome!

Realize that God does not condemn us when we fall. He convicts us, but this is so different from condemnation.

Conviction says, "Come closer to God," condemnation says you can't go to Him. Conviction says, "Get up, He loves you" condemnation says, don't even try.

God loves us. This is so clear throughout the Bible, He is a loving Father and He loves us. He knows how tempted we get, but if we fall, he NEVER says we are hopeless or we are going to hell.

God just says, "Come." Ask Him to cleanse you, the moment you ask, He does. Ask Him to help you, He will.

Does a human father tell a child who keeps falling that it is hopeless, or that they can't come to him? Of course not. God is much better than any father we have, He says, "Come." He loves you, He will help you. He NEVER gives up on us.

Thanks for your skiing illustration.. Its quite good, and a true reminder that we can improve, and we don't have to wallow in self-pity when we make mistakes or fail. Maturity is not perfectionism, but a drive and desire to be God-like in terms of character, actions, thoughts, and motives. I appreciate you sharing this! ~Sean

I am glad it helps.

Just remember God loves you. He has promised a way of escape, 1 Cor. 10:13, and He is for you, not against you. He can help, and He forgives you if you do stumble.

I had a pastor once who said that we should say "Alleluia!" every time we see a command in Scripture. He said that if God commands something, He will also help us do it. 1 Peter 1:15 says, "Be holy, as I am holy," that's a command, so then, Alleluia! He will help!
