  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am running W/98 with IE 6.0. When I go to shut down the computer (choosing shut down in the Start menu) I get a dialog box with a warning stating "Can Not Quit". This only happens when I log on the internet with IE. If I do not log on or use IE I do not get the C.N.Q. dialog warning and the system shuts down automaticly.
The only way to shut it down is to do Ctrl, Alt, Del. Let the system reboot and after Windows has reloaded choose shut down from the Start menu. When the system was new it did not act this way. There has to be a way to fix it can anyone help me find a solution? Thanks.

Toss Winders out the Window.... LoL I sugguest getting Linux or Windows XP.

I agree with switching to XP, but I don't recommend upgrading a 98se system to XP, there are just to many variables (ie. hardware compatibilty, software compatibility, not enough resourses, etc..)...As for the getting stuck thing, make sure you have run windows update and downloaded all the patchs and fixes for IE, from expericence I have had the same problem and by installing the patchs and updates it solved the problem.......

It sounds like you have a virus, if you are sure you are bug free, you might want to try downloading the patch for IE6

Now that you say it, I do believe that sounds like a virus or worm or even spyware.......I dont' recommend "freeware" because it's messed up my system to many times, but maybe someone could recommend something to scan for spyware...... (I just have bad luck with freeware).....

Adware is by far the best, easy to use, easy to update, very effective, and best of all, free

Thanks to all who have helped. Sense I removed my old key board and put on a new one my system shuts down now, go figure.

Ok, that's kinda like my crazy aunt telling me to take off the gas cap on my car so it stops over heating......unless u had a short in your keyboard causing odd commands to go though, I don't see how the keyboard would have caused that because it wouldn't have let the system boot, it would have sat there at the bios screen saying keyboard error.....who knows though, I've seen weirder things.....

I know very little about the workings of the computer machine, but the key board was from an older model that was put together by a local business. They used many "Genius" parts and the key board was one. It had many features that I liked or the command prompts were set to be able to access the web, pull up menus and several other options. One of which was a command prompt to put the computer in a snooze state. There was also software with it. After I put on this key board a standard key board by "Samsung" (that came with this system) I chose shut down to close that night and the system shut down. I don't understand it but it is behaving for now.

Ok, now that you describe this more, I have an HP computer and it has a multimedia keyboard with all the buttons on the top.....well, I upgraded from windows 98 to windows ME and the keyboard worked fine, then I upgraded and did a full install of windows xp pro, well after doing that I had trouble with the system hanging if the computer wasn't loaded totally before I tried to do anything, it turned out that the keyboard drivers for the multimedia buttons was causing the computer to quit responding and causing it to freeze after disconnecting from Netzero (thank god I got cable, I hated netzero), once I uninstalled the drivers I had no problem with the computer freezing, but I don't have use of the multimedia buttons anymore.....it's possible that your keyboard wasn't compatible with windows 98 and an update from windows update made it worse....
