I got a new computer before Windows Vista came out but got a free upgrade on my package for it. I got the copy of it but I have heard so many horror story's about it with people havening problems playing games, crashing ect. that I am reluctant to put it on.

So I was just wondering what people on here are experiencing with it.

Haven't installed it yet, there are issues with my development tools running on Vista. Eventually the issues will be resolved but until then I'm not touching Vista with a 10ft pole. Even then I may wait until I'm ready to upgrade my video card, CPU and add even more RAM (over 2GB at that point from the 1536MB I have currently). Anyway, Vista is suppose to be hailed as a great gaming platform using DX10, but there are few games using DX10, currently. Hardly even any video cards that support DX10 as well...
...maybe next year.

Yea apperently it wont let me use 2 8800s at the same time or let me use more then 4gb or ram.
Is that Vista or your motherboard giving you problems with the 8800s? There have been quite a few SLI problems, particularly with the 680i chipset.

The 4 GB of RAM limitation is due to you using a 32-bit operating system. That's the "hard limit" of 32-bit processing, minus tweaks that will allow your system to "fake" 64-bit processing. In fact, if you're seeing all 4 GB in 32-bit Vista, you should rejoice. Most people under Win32 have to live with 3.25-3.5 GB given the way Windows works combined with BIOS limitations.

Vista is too new to use. No need to be a beta tester, just wait a year or two

yea it should take them 5 or so years to release the next opperating system, Viena. From the discription it sounds horrid and will probably cause tons of problems. Its supposed to be a sandbox os

Also they will get rid of the entire start menu things, they will probably replace it with a dock ( Mac OSX) I will be interested to see what they take from apple this time. I was thinking they could copy Spaces and rename it Cubicles or somthing like that.

im gonna wait with xp pro tweaked out until vista can offer comparable performance and functionality.... right now it is built for a new computer user rather than power users. im sure i will eventually switch though - i already have my copy of vista ultimate.

DudDoodoo if you have a copy of XP Pro with that old computer you should consider using it for your new machine - unless you think the extra "features" vista offers are worth the performance loss then xp pro will be your best choice.

Vista is good. I recently got one. Most of the problems you encounter in games is easily fixed by changing a few file settings and a majority of the time it's a one off fix.

Vista however is slower than XP because of the slick graphical user interface.

My verdict, get Vista if you can. There's really no point staying in xp unless you don't mind.

Has anyone had any experience running Vista that was NOT bogged down by all the manufacturer's added software?

I was working at a computer store when Vista came out, and I had to set up all the demos. Every single one of them ran so sluggish it was disgusting, but I was never able to determine if it was Vista or if it was all the pre-loaded software that companies insist on weighing their machines down with. So I'm curious if anyone has had a chance to run Vista and only Vista, and if so, was it as fast and responsive as XP?

I've been running Vista since launch day back at the end of January.

I have had a few problems with crashes but not many. I love the interface and some of the MS programs that come with it (ie. Windows Picture Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Mah Jong!!).

After using Vista Premium for awhile, going back to XP feels very dull and boring.

However, the simple fact is that there is nothing wrong with XP, especially since SP2, and while Vista has proven to be very stable for me, XP still wins on that front for the time being.

My advice, and I know it is late in coming, is to stick with XP if it is working well for you. If you would like a slicker interface with some extra bells and whistles, by all means install Vista and go for the ride.

Just make sure that the software and hardware you are using is Vista compatible, though I haven't had any problems with my printer, mouse, digital camera or camcorder.

Has anyone had any experience running Vista that was NOT bogged down by all the manufacturer's added software?

Yes and it is faster than XP, though I have an AMD X2 4600+ and 2 gigs of RAM.
