I was just wondering why people have chosen to be Baptist. I'm not talking to those who have grown up in a Baptist church but those who have fully chosen to be Baptist. It was just a question brought up that I am simply asking. I once heard a saying: It's like brands of shoes, some people like Nike while others like K-Swiss, both are good shoes. Baptist and Methodist and so on all follow Jesus Christ but it's just the type of shoe they like to wear.__Why do you perfer Baptist?

It is the most biblically sound, and we usually keep things simple as far as churches governing themselves mostly. It has been my observation that most times Baptists are less likely to compromise the gospel. I've never met a baptist I didn't like.

Plus Baptists have a lot more fun.

I don't know if I would go around comparing denominations to brand names....some denominations are pretty loopy.

Didn't get saved until I was 25.

Why I fellowship as a Baptist now:

1. Priesthood of the believer.
2. Local Autonomy
3. Bible Inerrancy.
4. Bible Authority.
5. Emphasis on Evangelism.
6. Understanding of "the church".
7. Gospel of the Free Grace of God defended.

Among other things.
:)

I experienced Baptist preaching for the first time after leaving a non-denom church for putting too much emphasis on the appearance for the TV cameras that were at every service. We went to the chapel on base and the preacher there was superb. He was a by-the-Book (Bible) Baptist preacher. ;) I liked that, because often I felt at my old churches that Scripture was like the National Anthem at a baseball game- it starts everything off and is not heard from again until the very end.
The Baptist preaching I have heard and experience so far has been expository preaching heavy in hermeneutics and Bible study instead of how we should relate in society from the preacher's point of view. I liked that and have found that my Baptist church has embraced the ideas of John and Paul- the idea of changing the conveyance of the message without changing the contents of the message to relate to other groups. For instance, we sing both hymns and praise and worship music to allow both the young and the old to praise God as they feel that they should. But, the key is expository preaching. Without it, I'd still probably be a middle-of-the-road type of guy without much feeling for God.

I am all for breaking down the barriers of the denom's, though. I think there should be less of "I am a Baptist" or "I am a Catholic" or "I am Orthodox" or "I am x denom of Protestant" and more of "I am a follower of Jesus and a Christian."

God bless you,
Dave

Point of Information: Two of the "denoms" mentioned teach that their church is necessary for salvation (and indeed the only true way of salvation), so there is little value in "breaking down the barriers". Also, one of those groups officially condemns the gospel believed by most Baptists with an anathema*. Therefore, since we can't agree on the basics of salvation, there is no need to try to seek any unity beyond that.

:(

I am a Baptist because of conviction. I truly believe the Baptist church resembles the first churches, like Antioch and what we follow is doctrinally sound. Not throwing off on other denoms, although some need to be thrown out :)D ), but some are pretty frumpy and would rather make their church look more desirable than Jesus Himself.

I personally attend the Baptist church in my area because I feel that God called me to be there. I grew up in Evangelical/Pentecostal church, and that is where my leanings naturally are. So I guess I don't know why God has me here.
